Hugo Lloris: Five possible replacements for Tottenham’s error-prone goalkeeper

25 Oct

Tottenham Hotspur may soon be looking for a new goalkeeper with Hugo Lloris making another mistake and no.2 Michel Vorm out of contract next summer.

Lloris has helped Spurs progress from Europa League side to Premier League title contenders but they may have outgrown the France World Cup winner.

Lloris walks off the pitch after being sent off in Eindhoven.

Once considered a fine sweeper keeper, his ability on the ball isn’t as good as many of his fellow shot-stoppers at elite clubs around Europe.

With manager Mauricio Pochettino clearly valuing this in his tactics it seems likely he may move on from his current captain.

But if he does, who should Spurs sign to replace him? Check out five contenders below.

Jiri Pavlenka (Werder Bremen)

The 26-year-old Czech star has had a stunning rise to prominence and is now continuing his sublime form into a second season in Bremen. The Bundesliga giants signed the shot-stopper for just €3million (£2.65m), which has proved an incredible bargain.

Pavlenka is starring in the Bundesliga

He’s a smart shot-stopper who doesn’t make rash decisions, excelling in one-on-one situations and impresses with his agility and ability to make fingertip saves. With Manuel Neuer’s decline some believe him to be the best goalkeeper in the Bundesliga. The fact Bremen have talented young star Luca Plogmann on their books could help Spurs’ cause if they wish to sign Pavlenka.

Edouard Mendy (Stade Reims)

The Senegal international’s career was almost over before it started with an aborted transfer to an unnamed League One side in 2014 almost resulting in his retirement.

Mendy has had a brilliant season so far.

He showed his resilience, though, working his way back up at Le Havre and Marseille before joining Reims in 2016 and was a key part of their promotion to Ligue 1 this season. A dominant goalkeeper in the air, he’s confident when it comes to commanding his area but his penchant for punching could see him come a cropper in the Premier League.

Alban Lafont (Fiorentina)

The French wonderkid might be a tough transfer to push through given his recent move to Italy but if Spurs choose to put their money where their mouth is they might just land him.

Lafont was wanted by Arsenal at one point.

Agile and with excellent reflexes, Lafont has talent but is still learning, his passing ability would be a big upgrade on Lloris, despite Lafont recently putting a goal-kick out for a corner.

Emil Audero (Juventus on loan at Sampdoria)

Having recently been compared to Italian legend Gianluca Pagliuca, it’s will be no surprise if top clubs begin sniffing around the 21-year-old talent. He has one of the highest save percentages in Europe, competing with the likes of Gianluigi Buffon and Liverpool star Alisson.

Audero has been given a chance to prove himself in Serie A.

Sampdoria do have an option to buy the player at the end of the loan but could be persuaded to flip the player if offered serious cash. Tottenham are definitely keeping an eye on the Italian side having also been linked with defender Joachim Andersen

Thomas Strakosha (Lazio)

Tottenham could potentially land the Albanian international on a free transfer as his contract runs out next summer.

Strakosha may be looking at his future in the coming months.

It may be a case Lloris’ form may force them to pull the trigger on a transfer and land him in January to share duties and provide more competition than Michel Vorm and Paulo Gazzaniga. Strakosha is certainly more confident with the ball at his feet than Lloris and is a more than capable shot-stopper too.
