talkSPORT exclusive: Alfie Mawson believes Aleksandar Mitrovic will be of huge importance to Fulham this season

8 Aug

Alfie Mawson says Aleksandar Mitrovic will be crucial for Fulham ahead of the 2018/19 Premier League season.

Fulham have been exceptionally busy in the transfer market since winning promotion back to the Premier League in May – making seven signings which include Mawson and Mitrovic.

Mitrovic scored 12 goals in 17 appearances in the Championship last season

The defender completed his £20million move to Craven Cottage last week but admitted to being impressed by what he’s seen of the Serbian already.

Mitrovic joined the Cottagers on a permanent deal from Newcastle after a successful loan spell during the second half of last season while Fulham were vying for promotion from the Championship.

Speaking to talkSPORT’s Jim White, Mawson said: “He [Mitrovic] is a big man! He’s 23-years-old and built like an absolute body builder and is as strong as an ox.

“Against Celta Vigo on Saturday their centre-half has looked to go tight on him, but he’s thrown the defender off the ball and wrapped one in from about 25 yards.

Mawson was also excited about what Schurrle has to offer

“It’s always good to have that because this club is renowned for its ball playing ability but to have a target man like him will be crucial this season.”

Mawson also sung the praises of Andre Schurrle – who joined the club on a two-year loan deal from Borussia Dortmund earlier this summer.

And Mawson claimed that the team are expecting a lot from him but was confident the German would thrive off that.

Mawson added: “Schurrle obviously speaks for himself. He’s a World Cup winner and has played at some top top clubs.

“He’s been in London in his career already and maybe he’s made a decision to come to a club that is more suited to him.

“We’re expecting a lot from him and he’s going to thrive off that.”

Fulham transfer news: Alfie Mawson completes £20million move from Swansea

Newly-promoted Premier League side Fulham have secured the signing of defender Alfie Mawson from Swansea for a fee of up to £20million.

The 24-year-old defender, who has signed a four-year deal at Craven Cottage, is the west London club’s sixth signing of their summer as they bolster their squad ahead of their return to the Premier League.

Mawson said: “I’m really happy to get this over the line and join Fulham.

“I’m excited by the project going on here and the football being played last season was lovely on the eye but also effective and I can’t wait to be a part of it and get going.

Fulham transfer news: Alfie Mawson to have medical at Cottagers after Swansea accept £20million offer for defender

30 Jul

Alfie Mawson is to have a medical with newly-promoted Premier League side Fulham on Tuesday after the Swans reportedly accepted a £20million bid for the player.

The highly rated defender, 24, has been linked with a move away from the Swans after they were unable to avoid the Premier League drop last season.

Mawson had been linked with the likes of Manchester United

Mawson was one of the shining lights in a dismal campaign for the Welsh side and just missed out on a place in England’s World cup squad after undergoing knee surgery towards the end of the season.

However, it seems Mawson will continue to play Premier League football as his proposed move to the west London club gathers momentum.

These are very exciting times for Slavisa Jokanovic’s side, who announced the permanent signing of Aleksandar Mitrovic for a fee of £22million earlier on Monday.

The club have also managed to hold on to the likes of Tom Cairney, who signed a new five-year deal with the club earlier this month.

Meanwhile, interest in teenage sensation Ryan Sessegnon from some of the Premier League’s top sides has cooled in recent weeks.
