Tottenham only club to make ‘serious offer’ for Bruno Fernandes but Sporting rejected it for one specific reason

5 Sep

Tottenham were the only team to make a ‘serious offer’ for Bruno Fernandes over the summer, Sporting CP’s president has revealed.

Frederico Varandas rejected Spurs’ bid, however, as he did not like the make up of the deal the north Londoners were proposing.

Fernandes was one of the most in-demand players throughout the summer transfer window, with a host of top European clubs allegedly looking at the midfielder.

He scored a stunning 32 goals from midfield last season, also creating a further 18, and was linked with Liverpool, Man United and Man City.

However, no deal could be done to prise Fernandes from Sporting and he ended up remaining in his homeland beyond the transfer deadline.

Varandas, Sporting’s president, has now confirmed Spurs were the only team to make a ‘serious’ move to sign the 24-year-old, even if other bids were submitted to the Portuguese club.

And while Tottenham were willing to match Fernandes’ €65million (£58.5m) asking price, Varandas was not ready to accept their offer as it included €20m in add-ons.

“It was ‘impossible’ to retain Bruno Fernandes, but we did it,” Varandas told Sporting’s official website.

“We prepared for his sale by putting a fair price on his worth, and we had bids, but only a serious offer from Tottenham, that was 45 million euros plus 20 million in add-ons; winning the Premier League and the Champions League.

“Finding these add-ons difficult, I decided not to accept.”

Despite being linked with a host of top clubs, Fernandes was forced to remain at Sporting until January at the earliest.

He has not taken this poorly, however, starting the season in fine form with two goals and four assists in just five matches.

Man United scout summer transfer target Bruno Fernandes again and watch him record hat-trick of assists

27 Aug

Manchester United failed to sign Bruno Fernandes throughout the summer transfer window, but Red Devils scouts have reportedly not given up watching the Portugal star.

Fernandes, the Sporting midfielder, was understood to be a key target of United’s since the end of last season, as the 24-year-old scored 32 goals and created a further 18 in all competitions in 2018/19.

Bruno Fernandes has already scored one goal and registered four assists this season

The likes of Liverpool and Tottenham are also reported to have been keen on Fernandes earlier this year, but no summer deal got done so he remained in his homeland.

This failed transfer has not ended the interest in Fernandes, however.

Reports in Spain claim European clubs continue to keep tabs on the midfielder, with O Jogo saying United scouts were in attendance when Sporting faced Portimonense on Sunday.

The story insists the United representatives were at the match only to watch Fernandes, and they must have been impressed as he recorded a hat-trick of assists.

Fernandes created all three goals as Raphinha scored a brace either side of Luiz Phellype’s lone strike, as Sporting won 3-1 to sit top of the Primeira Liga table after three games.

Antoine Griezmann’s Arsenal squad on Football Manager 2019 is unreal – meet the wonderkids starring for the Gunners in 2023

15 Aug

Antoine Griezmann may well have completed his move to FC Barcelona this summer, but the World Cup winner clearly has a soft spot for Arsenal.

The 28-year-old posted a screenshot of his Football Manager game onto Twitter and revealed he is currently undertaking a save as the Gunners’ gaffer.

Time had elapsed in the game until 2023 and it is fair to say the former Atletico Madrid striker has assembled a world class squad.

Packed with a host of stars, there is not a single current squad member in the team, much to the chagrin of Alexandre Lacazette.

Replying to his France international colleague in the replies, Griezmann revealed that after winning the Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup in 2021, he sold the striker to Huddersfield for £23.5million!

Unai Emery may have splashed the cash on the likes of Kieran Tierney and Nicolas Pepe this summer, but the Spaniard will be envious of the side Griezmann has built at the Emirates.

Bristling with young talent, the France international has built a very good Gunners team

But just who are the players Griezmann has picked for his Arsenal side? Given how much time has elapsed, there are a few ‘newgen’ players in the squad such as the goalkeeper – Hasan.

Below, talkSPORT.com has provided mini profiles on each real member of the team. ALl of the stats are from the game and are not the latest

Check out the sensational side Griezmann has created!

Manchester United transfer news: Sporting Lisbon captain Bruno Fernandes is NOT flying to the UK for a medical

28 Jul

Bruno Fernandes is NOT flying to England to have a medical with Manchester United.

The Sporting Lisbon captain is one of the most coveted players in world football after his 31-goal season in Portugal, with United frontrunners.

Reports over the weekend suggested Fernandes would be flying to the UK to undergo a medical ahead of a move.

However, the Daily Express claims this is not the case.

The Red Devils have not actually agreed a fee with Sporting for the Portugal international, meaning the race to complete the deal before the August 8 transfer deadline is very much so alive.

Despite this setback, boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is confident of adding more players this summer after splashing the cash on Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James.

The Portugal international is also the captain of Sporting Lisbon

The United boss revealed: “As I’ve said and answered a few times, we’re working on one or two cases.

“But obviously my objective now when I’m here is we’ve got to get ready for the games and training sessions.

“And if I’ve got to travel somewhere I will. And you won’t be able to ask me.

“We’re working on putting a squad together that can compete.

“Of course we have some youngsters but we have loads of players that can play and loads of ways we can play.”

Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic was also supposedly a target, but the Red Devils have ruled out a move for the Serbia international.

Manchester United transfer news: Bruno Fernandes ‘ready to fly to UK for medical’ ahead of £63million move from Sporting Lisbon

27 Jul

Bruno Fernandes is reportedly preparing to fly to England to undergo a medical at Manchester United.

The Red Devils have been chasing the attacking midfielder all summer and is believed to be one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s top targets.

It would appear a deal may be edging closer if the reports coming out of Italy are to be believed.

Corriere dello Sport claim that a £63million deal has been agreed with Sporting Lisbon for Fernandes and he will undergo a medical to finalise the move.

It is not thought that this deal would hinder the of Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who will  reportedly only join the Red Devils if Paul Pogba leaves.

Fernandes impressed last season as he racked up an impressive 32 goals and 18 assists for club and county.

He also refused to rule out the possibility of Sporting’s draw with Liverpool being his last for the Portuguese club.

Fernandes said: “Will this be the last match for Sporting? I don’t know, it’s the coach who decides.

“I told you before I’d like to play in England, but I don’t care about it right now.

“If it could be this season? It could be when the club decides, I’m not in charge.”

Transfer update: Tierney to Arsenal STILL ON, Fernandes to Man United ‘unlikely’, Dybala to Spurs latest

25 Jul

Arsenal have NOT given up their pursuit of Celtic defender Kieran Tierney and the Scotland international ‘will soon be on his way to the Emirates’, talkSPORT has been told.

Unai Emery is desperate to strengthen his defence this summer and had made left-back Tierney one of his top targets, with the 22-year-old reportedly keen to move to north London.

It was claimed earlier this week that the Gunners had decided to give up their chase after seeing a third bid rejected by Celtic.

However, according to talkSPORT correspondent Alex Crook, Arsenal are still chasing the Scot’s signature and an agreement for the player is ‘inching closer’.

Speaking on talkSPORT host Jim White’s transfer round-up, he said on Thursday: “It could be a busy could of days for Arsenal.

“Announcements are imminent for the arrivals of Dani Ceballos on loan from Real Madrid and young Saint Etienne defender William Saliba – and they are still very much in the hunt for Kieran Tierney.

“We know the Gunners have already had an offer of £15m dismissed out of hand, as Celtic want closer to £25m.

“But it does appear, according to my sources, that an agreement between the two clubs is inching closer.

“It looks like Tierney will be on his way to the Emirates.”

The talkSPORT reporter also brought us the latest reports on Manchester United’s pursuit of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes and Tottenham’s interest in Juventus striker Paulo Dybala.

Earlier in the window, Portugal international Fernandes looked certain to join the Red Devils, but according to Crook that deal now looks unlikely.

He added: “Fernandes’ name has been on the lips of United fans all summer and even more so after the shone against Liverpool and drew words of praise from Jurgen Klopp.

“It looks to me that Man United are getting further away.

“The player has expressed interest in a move to England but that move to Old Trafford now looks unlikely.

“United have been briefing journalists he is not their number one target. Now, either Solskjaer has an ace up his sleeve or United simply don’t have the funds to complete this big money transfer.”

Bringing Juventus striker Dybala to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would a huge statement of intent from Spurs
Getty

On the shock Dybala to Spurs links, Crook gave hope to Tottenham fans that a deal could happen, especially after the club chairman Daniel Levy negotiated a new shirt sponsorship deal with AIA worth £320m.

“This is one that has come completely out of the blue overnight,” he said.

“It does appear this is a deal Mauricio Pochettino wants to make happen.

“They would have to fork out £80m to sign the Argentine from Juventus, and what a statement of intent it would be for Tottenham.

“They’ve just signed that big-money shirt sponsorship deal, so maybe this is going to be the first of the money laid down from that deal.”

Liverpool news: Simon Mignolet howler gifts Bruno Fernandes goal as Reds end pre-season tour with 2-2 Sporting Lisbon draw

25 Jul

Simon Mignolet gave everyone a reminder why Liverpool spent £67million on a new goalkeeper last summer, after he was guilty of a dreadful howler in a pre-season friendly against Sporting Lisbon.

The Reds ended their pre-season tour of the United States of America without a win as they played out a 2-2 draw the Yankee Stadium.

And while Champions League goalscoring heroes Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum both found the net again, Mignolet made sure all the headlines will be about him after his latest blunder.

Reds fans will be thanking the football Gods for No.1 Alisson Becker after their Belgian No.2’s error gave Sporting an early lead after just four minutes.

Sporting captain Bruno Fernandes – a target for Manchester United this summer – sent in a speculative shot from 30 yards, and even though Mignolet was right behind it, he allowed the ball the bounce off his hands and into his net.

Virgil van Dijk looked in total disbelief as he gestured towards the goalkeeper, who later did the most Mignolet thing ever with a fine double save to deny Sporting.

Liverpool upped the tempo and Origi levelled things up on a rebound from close range in the 20th minute in New York.

Several more chances to score followed, before Wijnaldum put Liverpool in front just before half-time following a cross from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

But Klopp’s men did not stay out in front for long, as Brazilian midfielder Wendel tied the scores once again eight minutes after the break.

Neither side was able to find a breakthrough during the remainder of the match, as Liverpool ended their disappointing trip to the US with two defeats to Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla and a draw.

The friendly also saw the long-awaited debut for Liverpool’s summer signing Sepp Van Den Berg after he was granted international clearance by FIFA.

The 17-year-old, who arrived last month from PEC Zwolle for an initial £1.3million fee, was brought on in the 89th minute.

Manchester United transfer news: Sporting chiefs warn Red Devils they will not accept low offer for Bruno Fernandes

22 Jul

Sporting president Frederico Varandas has told Manchester United they will have to stump up more than £56million to sign Bruno Fernandes this summer.

Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to add at least two midfielders to his squad before the season starts, with Fernandes and Newcastle ace Sean Longstaff mooted as his desired targets.

Fernandes will not be allowed to leave for cheap

The Norwegian has insisted he will not pay over the odds for his targets – however, Leicester are playing hardball over the fee for Harry Maguire and Newcastle chiefs have placed a £50m price tag on Longstaff’s head.

Now, Sporting chiefs have warned United they will not accept any offers below their valuation of the playmaker.

“I don’t know if there are many or if there are few [interested clubs],” Varandas told RTP. “What I know, a lot has been spoken of values, coming to the press, €55m, €62m… for that he doesn’t leave, for sure.”

“If Bruno Fernandes leaves, players with quality will come. But if Bruno leaves.”

Solskjaer is still keen to settle the future of French midfielder Paul Pogba, with the World Cup winner admitting he is keen for a new challenge last month.

LaLiga giants Real Madrid are desperate to sign Pogba, but United have demanded £170m for the midfielder.
