Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United fans want to sign France Under-21 star Dayot Upamecano after impressive display against England

19 Jun

The European Under-21s Championships are an excellent opportunity for fans to try and spot who the future stars of the game.

England, who are in Group C alongside Romania, Croatia and France, have a number of promising youngsters in their ranks including James Maddison, Phil Foden and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

However, the Young Lions got their campaign in Italy off to a bad start with a 2-1 loss to the French, in a game which saw them blow a 1-0 lead and conceded two late goals.

There were some positives to take for England though – Foden’s goal was marvellous as the Manchester City midfielder beat numerous defenders before calmly slotting the ball in the corner of the net.

But it was France’s night and a number of their players put in good performances including centre-back Dayot Upamecano.

The 20-year-old starlet, who made 22 appearances in all competitions for Bundesliga giants RB Leipzig, was in imperious form.

He may have let Foden pass him a bit easily in the lead up to England’s goal but other than that, Upamecano was brilliant.

And his display did not go unnoticed by fans on Twitter – with Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United supporters suggesting they could put in a bid for him this summer instead of having to fork out an astronomical fee for an old player.

Below you can see some of the best tweets about Upamecano.

Manchester United transfer news: Five potential Mathijs De Ligt alternatives with Ajax captain ‘close’ to Paris Saint-Germain move

12 Jun

Manchester United’s pursuit of Matthis De Ligt looks set to finally be brought to an end with the defender set to join Paris Saint-Germain.

The Ajax captain, who is still only just 19, has emerged as one of the brightest young talents in world football and has even been courted by Barcelona.

But, according to reports, PSG have stolen a march on their European rivals and will wrap up De Ligt’s signature soon.

Last summer, Jose Mourinho tried and failed to bring a marquee centre-half to the club, with the likes of Giorgio Chiellini and Diego Godin linked.

But when the Atletico Madrid skipper used United’s interest as leverage, Mourinho and the club left negotiations with their tails tucked firmly between their legs.

In order to avoid such embarrassment this season, Ed Woodward and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will surely be looking to conclude their business early this time around.

So just who else could they get to shore up their defence instead?

talkSPORT.com has identified five potential targets for the Red Devils instead of Paris-bound De Ligt. Scroll down to see the possible candidates.

Harry Maguire (Leicester City)

Last summer, United were told to pay £75million for the England international after his heroics at the World Cup.

This time around, Solskjaer and Woodward may have to shell out £80million to make that happen.

Maguire has continued to improve since his move from Sheffield United in 2017 and is dangerous in both penalty boxes.

His marauding runs from a left centre-back position are the stuff of legend and doesn’t let his defensive game suffer, managing 152 clearances in the Premier League last season.

Ruben Dias (Benfica)

The 22-year-old is highly-rated and wanted by Real Madrid

Real Madrid are tentatively looking to replace 33-year-old Sergio Ramos at centre-half and are reportedly looking at the Portugal international.

While Zinedine Zidane has already brought in Eder Militao from Porto, signing Dias would vastly improve their defence.

With De Ligt looking unlikely, United could steal a march on their European rivals and nab the 22-year-old from under Los Blancos’ noses.

Dias played both games in Portugal’s Nations League campaign, maintaining a 93 per cent pass accuracy and managed 11 recoveries in the final against the Netherlands.

Ibrahima Konate (RB Leipzig)

Last season, RB Leipzig conceded the fewest goals in the Bundesliga – thanks largely to the performances of Konate.

The Frenchman is lightning quick and strong in the air, meaning he would fit into a high-pressing style of play.

And his strongest attributes are not just physical either. The 20-year-old finished the season with a 92 per cent dribble completion rate in the Bundesliga, showing he is comfortable on the ball.

As the video below suggests, making a step up to the Premier League would not be a bridge too far, as Konate dominated Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski.

Arsenal have also been linked with a move fro the 19-year-old

This time last year, Upamecano was described by those in Germany as ‘the best young defender in world football’ ahead of De Ligt.

It would be incorrect to suggest the 20-year-old’s development has slowed, rather the Ajax captain has simply excelled that much.

“He loves defending, getting the ball off opponents,” France youth coach Jean-Claude Giuntini said of Upamecano prior to the FIFA U17 World Cup in 2015. “He’s still young and has room for improvement, but he has a great attitude, and a lot of determination.”

Issa Diop (West Ham United)

The French defender was imperious against United back in September

At the London Stadium last season, Issa Diop bullied Romelu Lukaku, Mohamed Salah and Harry Kane – none of the Premier League sharp-shooters were able to get past the Hammers defender at home.

A £24million signing from Toulouse, Diop initially struggled on his debut at Arsenal as Manuel Pellegrini’s side shipped four.

However, his reading of the game and the aggression he possesses mean the 22-year-old has all the attributes to go right to the top.

He does have a tendency to dive in and leave himself exposed, but 165 duels won in the top-flight last season suggest he has the drive and ability to make up for it.

Dayot Upamecano: Profile on the RB Leipzig defender wanted by Arsenal who could have joined Manchester United for £2million in 2015

31 May

Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano as they address their defensive woes this summer.

Upamecano, 20, was part of the tightest defence in the Bundesliga last season, keeping five clean sheets in his 15 league appearances, before missing the second half of the campaign with a knee injury.

However, the prospect of Upamecano arriving at the Emirates took a huge setback after the Gunners’ failure to qualify for the Champions League.

Unai Emery’s men finished fifth in the Premier League standings, while they were thumped 4-1 by London rivals Chelsea on Wednesday night in the Europa League final – as they missed out on qualification by virtue of winning that competition.

Leipzig are desperate to keep hold of their highly-rated defender, whose current deal expires in the summer of 2021.

Below talkSPORT.com give an in-depth insight into all you need to know about Upamecano…

How much is he likely to cost Arsenal?

The France Under-21 international has a release clause of £89million in his contract and RB Leipzig are thought to want a figure close to that.

The Gunners may need to raise funds by offloading the likes of Mesut Ozil, with reports claiming Emery will only have a transfer budget of £45million to rebuild his squad this summer.

Club career so far?

Upamecano is a youth product of Valenciennes FC, with his impressive progress there attracting the attention of a number of major European clubs at the time, including Manchester United.

The player’s agent, Thierry Martinez, revealed earlier this year that his client could have been a United player for just £2million in 2015, but claimed a move failed to materialise over broken promises.

He eventually joined Red Bull Salzburg in July 2015 for a reported fee of £1.9million.

After an impressive 18-month spell in Austria, Upamecano sealed a £8.8 million move to RB Leipzig on a four-and-a-half year deal.

The defender has established himself as one of the best young defenders in the world in Germany, with Upamecano shortlisted for the 2018 Golden Boy award.

International experience?

Upamecano is yet to make his senior bow for France, but has featured in every age group up to that point.

He was part of the Under-16 team that finished third in the 2014 Aegean Cup, while he was an ever-present in his country’s UEFA European Under-17 Championship success a year later.

To date, Upamecano has made seven appearances for the Under-21s, with it surely only a matter of time before he makes his full international debut.

Where would he fit in at the Emirates?

Right at the heart of the Arsenal defence.

While their defensive deficiencies are going to take a long while to fix, the north London side need reinforcements and he’d slip into a starting role with ease.

Quiet and mellow behind the surface, Upamecano’s reading of the game and tough tackling nature have led to him being regarded as one of the best youngsters in the world.

The dynamic defender also has pace to burn and enjoys getting forward when he can.

Leipzig’s youngest-ever Bundesliga player, Upamecano has the composure of a player far older than this years, while he also dispossesses a silky touch and excellent passing range.

Manchester United’s transfer move for RB Leipzig youngster Dayot Upamecano failed over broken promises, agent claims

9 Feb

Manchester United’s move for RB Leipzig youngster Dayot Upamecano failed to materialise over broken promises, his agent has claimed.

Upamecano, 20, is regarded as one of Europe’s top young defenders and has started 13 Bundesliga games this season.

Dayot Upamecano is highly-rated by RB Leipzig chiefs

And Thierry Martinez has revealed Upamecano could have been a United player for just £2million in 2015.

Martinez told French outlet So Foot: “An intermediary met with us, but between the project she presented us and what was actually going to happen.

“A flat was promised, but that changed to a host family with only six return trips for his parents.

“When you uproot a player at such a young age, that isn’t enough.

“I wanted Dayot to have a stable emotional balance off the pitch.”

United have made signing a centre-half their top priority this summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s defence has shipped 35 league goals this term. Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are battling it out for a starting place.

But it is understood that United need a commanding centre-back if they are to challenge for the Premier League title next season.
