This week, the player’s agent launched a furious attack on Celtic for not selling him when Fulham made an approach, and hinted that Boyata may refuse to play for the club until he got his wish to leave.
However, Boyata has hit back at the rumours and insists he has not gone on strike, but has actually been sidelined by injury.
“I did not refuse to play – I have a little problem with the hamstring,”
he told Belgian website DH.be.
“I’m really behind my team-mates for tonight’s big game.
“What’s going on is that I’m in a special position, and when I hear that I’ve refused to play since I came back from vacation, it’s wrong.
“I have not refused to play.
“Since my return to training, I ran a lot out with the group to work physically and I felt several small pains in the calf and hamstring.
“I went to the physio every day. Last Thursday, I hurt myself by slipping in training and I held my leg directly.
“The physio saw it and examined me right after the session.
“I put ice on my leg for 30 minutes and, the next day, I said that I had pain.
“The exams proved that I could not play against Hearts.
“On Monday morning, I was still with a physio and the other injured players at the club.”
However, Boyata also responded to the comments made by his agent, Jacques Lichtenstein, and said he has “100 per cent confidence” in his representative, perhaps hinting a move could still be on the cards before the August 31 deadline.
Boyata added: “Personally, I’m not going to react too much to what my agent has been saying in the press.
“I have been working with him for years, I have 100 per cent confidence in him.
“In relation to his statements, he has his reasons. But, I repeat, I trust him.”
talkSPORT host Alan Brazil has SLAMMED Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata as ‘a disgrace’, amid reports the Belgian is refusing to play for the Hoops as he looks to leave the club.
It is claimed Boyata, who is in the final year of his contract, has downed tools after the Parkhead club denied him a move to the Premier League with Fulham earlier this month.
The centre-back has not travelled with the Bhoys squad for Tuesday’s Champions League qualifying clash at AEK Athens, with manager Brendan Rodgers admitting that he was ‘saddened’ Boyata has stayed at home.
The 27-year-old’s absence has been explained by an apparent injury, but claims in Scotland have accused Boyata of refusing to play for the club again as he seek to force through an exit before the transfer window closes on August 31.
And Brazil, a Glasgow boy and huge Celtic fan, is furious with the player’s conduct.
“I just don’t know what he’s playing at to be honest, I don’t know what he’s playing at,” the Sports Breakfast host said on Tuesday.
“Nobody really knew him before Brendan gave him a chance at Celtic.
“He’s gone to the World Cup, he’s done great and his agent has thought, ‘cash-in time now!’
“As far as I’m concerned he has to play tonight, he should have travelled to play tonight.
“But he’s said ‘I’m not playing’, and it’s tools down.
“I think he’s making a big, big mistake, but that’s the modern day player now. Do they care? Do they care about the badge, about the club? No.
“He’s got 60,000 every week and he does that, it’s a joke, a disgrace.
“A bad character, I would say.
“If I was thinking of buying him, like Fulham are by all accounts, I would be worried about his temperament, his heart, about his ethics and about what sort of man he is.”

Celtic have rejected a bid from Fulham for Dedryck Boyata, manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed.
The Premier League club have targeted the 27-year-old defender and are reported to have offered £9million.
“Yes, we have had a few enquiries and there was a confirmed bid by Fulham for him,” Rodgers said.
“He is a player that we don’t want to lose. We know he is in the last year of his deal.
“He has been a fantastic player for me in my time here, he had an excellent World Cup when he played.
“He is clearly a player of value and, at this point in time for us, he is very important and the club rejected that.”
Celtic play the first leg of their Champions League third qualifier against AEK Athens at Parkhead on Wednesday night, but Boyata is not quite ready to feature following his exploits with Belgium during the summer.
Olivier Ntcham is fit. The French midfielder suffered an Achilles injury in the 3-1 home win against Livingston on Saturday but has shrugged it off.
Moussa Dembele remains out with a hamstring complaint and Marvin Compper and Lewis Morgan are still working their way back from injury.
