Boyata won four Scottish Premiership titles after joining Celtic from Manchester City in 2015.

Speaking about his move to the German club, he said: “The club is ambitious and has goals that I stand by.

“I was very impressed by how [Hertha general manager] Michael Preetz tried to talk to me and showed me a clear plan.”

Preetz added: “We’ve had Dedryck in our sights for some time now and are fully convinced of his qualities, and we are confident that he is a real reinforcement for our defence.”

Boyata fell out with former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers last summer after the club rejected a £9million bid from Premier League new boys Fulham.

After being banished from the first-team, he made a scoring return by netting the only goal against Hamilton last August.

The Belgium international’s last Celtic game came in a 2-1 win over arch rivals Rangers in March after a hamstring injury ruled him out for the rest of the season.

Boyata made 135 appearances for the Hoops.

‘Wantaway’ Celtic star Dedryck Boyata slams strike rumours and insists he is not able to play due to injury

Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata insists there is no truth to claims he is refusing to play for the Hoops to try and force a move away from the club before the end of the transfer window.

Boyata has insisted he is injured and NOT refusing to play for Celtic

The Belgian has been widely criticised following reports he had downed tools for the Hoops after the club denied him a summer switch to Premier League side Fulham earlier this month.

Boyata did not travel with the rest of the Celtic squad for their crucial Champions League qualifying tie at AEK Athens on Tuesday night, with manager Brendan Rodgers admitting he was ‘saddened’ by the situation regarding the centre-back.

This week, the player’s agent launched a furious attack on Celtic for not selling him when Fulham made an approach, and hinted that Boyata may refuse to play for the club until he got his wish to leave.

However, Boyata has hit back at the rumours and insists he has not gone on strike, but has actually been sidelined by injury.

“I did not refuse to play – I have a little problem with the hamstring,”

he told Belgian website DH.be.

“I’m really behind my team-mates for tonight’s big game.

Dedryck Boyata was lined wit ha £9million move to Fulham, but Celtic said no

“What’s going on is that I’m in a special position, and when I hear that I’ve refused to play since I came back from vacation, it’s wrong.

“I have not refused to play.

“Since my return to training, I ran a lot out with the group to work physically and I felt several small pains in the calf and hamstring.

“I went to the physio every day. Last Thursday, I hurt myself by slipping in training and I held my leg directly.

“The physio saw it and examined me right after the session.

“I put ice on my leg for 30 minutes and, the next day, I said that I had pain.

“The exams proved that I could not play against Hearts.

‘He’s a disgrace’ – Celtic star SLAMMED by talkSPORT host Alan Brazil

“On Monday morning, I was still with a physio and the other injured players at the club.”

However, Boyata also responded to the comments made by his agent, Jacques Lichtenstein, and said he has “100 per cent confidence” in his representative, perhaps hinting a move could still be on the cards before the August 31 deadline.

Boyata added: “Personally, I’m not going to react too much to what my agent has been saying in the press.

“I have been working with him for years, I have 100 per cent confidence in him.

“In relation to his statements, he has his reasons. But, I repeat, I trust him.”

It is claimed Boyata, who is in the final year of his contract, has downed tools after the Parkhead club denied him a move to the Premier League with Fulham earlier this month.

And Brazil, a Glasgow boy and huge Celtic fan, is furious with the player’s conduct.

“Nobody really knew him before Brendan gave him a chance at Celtic.

Dedryck Boyata has made over 100 appearances for Celtic, winning six domestic trophies

“He’s gone to the World Cup, he’s done great and his agent has thought, ‘cash-in time now!’

“As far as I’m concerned he has to play tonight, he should have travelled to play tonight.

“But he’s said ‘I’m not playing’, and it’s tools down.

“I think he’s making a big, big mistake, but that’s the modern day player now. Do they care? Do they care about the badge, about the club? No.

“He’s got 60,000 every week and he does that, it’s a joke, a disgrace.

“A bad character, I would say.

“If I was thinking of buying him, like Fulham are by all accounts, I would be worried about his temperament, his heart, about his ethics and about what sort of man he is.”
