Chelsea transfer news: Blues youngster Ethan Ampadu excited by ‘perfect step’ after joining RB Leipzig on loan

22 Jul

Chelsea teenager Ethan Ampadu believes a spell in the Bundesliga is the ideal move for his career after securing a one-year loan at RB Leipzig.

The 18-year-old, who can play either as a centre-back or as a defensive midfielder, featured just five times last season under former Blues boss Maurizio Sarri.

Ampadu has joined RB Leipzig on loan

New Chelsea manager Frank Lampard revealed recently he tried to sign Ampadu on loan in January when he was in charge at Derby.

The move to RB Leipzig will be Ampadu’s first loan spell since his arrival at Stamford Bridge from Exeter two years ago.

Ampadu has made 12 appearances in his two years with Chelsea and in September 2018 he signed a new five-year contract.

Chelsea are banned from signing players during the next two transfer windows until the end of January 2020, which could have opened up an opportunity for Wales international Ampadu this season.

New head coach Lampard, though, feels the move to Germany will prove beneficial for all parties.

“I tried to sign Ethan on loan at Derby last year so I’m a big fan,” Lampard said on the Chelsea website.

“But with the minutes he played last year, in the interest of Ethan and of Chelsea, the idea he can play a lot of games somewhere could be good for him.

“I really wanted to work with Ethan this year. That’s a slight disappointment, but it’s to benefit of him.

“In midfield and defence we have a lot of quality, so each player is a case by case.”

Ampadu believes the switch will prove the ‘perfect step’.

“I’m delighted to be at RB Leipzig and can’t wait to start the season with my new team. I want to get to know the lads and integrate into the team as quickly as possible,” he said on Leipzig’s website.

“I have followed the club in recent years and have seen how well young players have developed here and how much potential this club has, so it’s the perfect step for me.”

Chelsea lost 1-0 to J League side Kawasaki Frontale in their pre-season friendly in Yokohama.

Lampard will now prepare his squad for the Rakuten Cup clash against Barcelona in Saitama on Tuesday.

Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante will not feature as he has returned to England to continue rehabilitation for an injury connected to a knee problem sustained at the end of last season.

Chelsea transfer news: Ethan Ampadu joins RB Leipzig on season-long loan

22 Jul

Chelsea teenager Ethan Ampadu has joined RB Leipzig on a season-long loan.

The versatile 18-year-old, who can play in defence or midfield, failed to make a single Premier League appearance under Maurizio Sarri last season.

He did not travel with the Blues on their pre-season tour of China and new boss Frank Lampard is keen for him to gain more first-team experience.

“I tried to sign Ethan on loan at Derby last year, so I’m a big fan,” he said.

“But with the minutes he played last year, in the interest of Ethan and of Chelsea, the idea he can play a lot of games somewhere could be good for him.

Chelsea transfer news: Derby County manager Phillip Cocu not ruling out re-signing Blues stars Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori on loan

20 Jul

New Derby County manager Phillip Cocu feels it will ‘difficult but not impossible’ to bring in Chelsea trio Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori and Ethan Ampadu on loan this summer.

Former Netherlands international Cocu is the club’s first ever foreign manager and has signed a four-year contract to succeed Frank Lampard.

Phillip Cocu has taken over at Derby

Derby acted quickly to find a replacement for Lampard, who left after one season at Pride Park to take over at his former club Chelsea.

Much of the success Derby had under Lampard, in which they narrowly missed out on reaching the Premier League, came from the impact of on-loan stars Mount and Tomori, who was named Derby’s player of the year.

“It will be difficult I think. I don’t say impossible,” Cocu replied when asked about the chances of bringing them back to Derby.

And is Ampadu, who has been linked with a loan move to Germany, a possibility?

“There are a lot of possibilities still, but I don’t want to name any names yet,” Cocu said.

“For our own players – they know our team is not 100% – we’re trying to get some replacements in. That’s logical with the players that have left, with the budget and possibilities we have.”

Mount was brilliant for Derby last season – scored 11 goals and providing six assists for the Rams

Mount recently signed a new five-year contract with Chelsea, while Lampard is keen for Ampadu to get more first team football and he has reportedly undergone a medical ahead of a proposed loan to Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

Chelsea youngster Ethan Ampadu has reportedly undergone a medical ahead of a proposed loan move to Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

Ampadu has made one Premier League appearance for the Blues and manager Frank Lampard confirmed earlier this week that the midfielder would go out on loan.

Ampadu looks set to be another British youngster to try their luck in Germany

The 18-year-old was linked with a move to Aston Villa but Sky in Germany claims that Ampadu will actually be joining Leipzig.

He was not included in Chelsea’s squad for their pre-season tour of Japan in anticipation of the move.

Ampadu is set to become the next name in the growing contingent of young British talent seeking first-team opportunities in the German top flight.

The likes of Jadon Sancho, Ademola Lookman, Rabbi Matondo, Reiss Nelson and Reece Oxford have all enjoyed success in the Bundesliga.

Ampadu would join Lookman, who is keen to make his loan move from Everton to Leipzig permanent.

Ampadu poses with Chelsea’s away kit but he won’t wear it if he spends the season at Leipzig

However, Ampadu appears to still have a future with his club, having signed a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge in September 2018.

Chelsea transfer news: Frank Lampard confirms Ethan Ampadu is set for loan spell amid Aston Villa links

16 Jul

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has confirmed midfielder Ethan Ampadu is likely to be sent out on loan for the season.

The 18-year-old Wales international is absent from the club’s pre-season tour of Japan amid links with newly-promoted Aston Villa.

Lampard is keen for Ampadu to gain more first-team experience

He played just five times last season and did not feature in the Premier League under Maurizio Sarri.

Speaking at a press conference following Chelsea’s arrival in Japan, Lampard explained why the teenager hasn’t travelled with the Blues to Asia.

The new boss, who revealed he tried to sign Ampadu on loan during his spell as Derby manager, expects the Welshman to benefit from regular football elsewhere.

Newly-promoted Villa are in the market for a defensive midfielder following the release of Glenn Whelan and Mile Jedinak.

Manager Dean Smith is plotting a total overhaul of his squad this summer and the club have already made seven signings ahead of their return to the top flight.

Villa have a useful link to Chelsea, with John Terry as assistant boss, and the former Blues captain could help to secure a deal for Ampadu.

Chelsea are in Japan for their upcoming friendlies against Kawasaki Frontale and Barcelona ahead of the new season, which begins next month.

The Blues are banned from signing players for the next two transfer windows, but Lampard insists he is happy with the squad he has got.

“I think I’ve inherited very good players,” the former Derby manager said on Sky Sports. “We can’t bring any players in, we know that, this year, but I don’t need new players.

“I’m very happy with the squad and determined for us to be successful.”

Aston Villa transfer news: How the Villans could look next season with record-signing Wesley Moraes, Jack Butland and Leeds star Kalvin Phillips

1 Jul

Aston Villa’s promotion to the Premier League was met with jubilant celebrations and sighs of relief from large sections of the West Midlands.

Dean Smith’s side beat Derby County 2-1 at Wembley to end a three-year exile from the top flight, but the boyhood Villa fan instantly set about building a squad capable of staying up as soon as the champagne had dried off his suit.

Aston Villa are back in the Premier League and looking to stay there

Villa have already signed Jota from rivals Birmingham City, while Anwar El Ghazi and Kourtney Hause have made their loan moves permanent.

Club-record signing Wesley Moraes is expected to be confirmed on July 1 once work permit issues have been ratified, with the 17-goal striker making his £22million move from Club Brugge official.

Smith is still working hard to bring Tyrone Mings back to the club, with the Daily Express claiming the Villans want to add six more signings to their squad.

Jack Butland of Stoke is an option in goal, with Ethan Ampadu, Leeds star Kalvin Phillips and Brentford winger Said Benrahma also under consideration.

Jack Butland currently plays for Stoke City in the Championship

With John McGinn and Jack Grealish set to stay after superb seasons in the Championship, Villa could quite easily have a squad capable of challenging for a top half finish in the Premier League.

So how could Smith’s starting XI for next season look? Check it out below.

Last season, Smith alternated between a 4-3-3 formation and a 4-4-1-1, depending on who the opposition was. If, for instance, they were playing a more defensive team at home, Smith would drop Grealish back into midfield alongside McGinn and Glenn Whelan.

This would allow Villa to attack from deep and get their playmakers on the ball to create chances for former loanee Tammy Abraham up front and then supply into the wide areas where the full backs were given license to roam past their inverted wingers.

While Whelan and Neil Taylor performed dutifully last year, the introduction of Phillips into midfield and Matt Targett from Southampton at left-back adds greater mobility to the side.

If, however, they play sides who expect to dominate the ball and will try to pass Villa to death, Smith can implement a 4-4-1-1 formation to solidify his team, with Grealish playing in a more advanced role to feed off scraps from the lone striker.

Chelsea transfer news: Aston Villa want Ethan Ampadu on season-long loan – reports

16 Jun

Aston Villa have made enquires about bringing talented Chelsea star Ethan Ampadu on loan ahead of next season, reports claim.

The 18-year-old played just five times last season and did not feature once in the Premier League under Maurizio Sarri and Chelsea are keen for the versatile defender to get more experience.

Ethan Ampadu is wanted by Aston Villa

Villa boss Dean Smith wants to sign a defensive midfielder following the decision to release experienced duo Glenn Whelan and Mile Jedinak and the Wales international is more than capable of playing in that role.

The former Exeter City midfielder would be tempted by a switch and will be helped in his decision with former Chelsea captain John Terry, assistant manager at Villa.

Smith is leading a huge summer overhaul of his squad, with Anwar El Ghazi, Jota and Kortney Hause already signing on the dotted line this summer, while eight players have been released following their return to the top-flight.

Aston Villa are also keen on signing Stoke and England keeper Jack Butland this summer, while Tyrone Mings, who impressed during a loan spell in the second half of last season at Villa Park, is another player the newly-promoted side have their eye on – but a move for the 26-year-old is not expected to be imminent.

How Chelsea could line-up at the start of next season without Eden Hazard, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Callum Hudson-Odoi

19 May

There is plenty of uncertainty as to who will be available for Chelsea at the start of next season.

With an impending transfer ban coupled with the potential loss of Eden Hazard this summer there is sure to be plenty of changes.

Maurizio Sarri will have decisions to make when it comes to his team next season

It is looking increasingly likely that Hazard will join Real Madrid during the transfer window with reports suggesting the deal could be announced following the Europa League final with Arsenal.

The Blues will have to promote from within as they are due to be banned from signing any players for the next two transfer windows.

They are appealing the decision but may have to start planning for the worst case scenario.

Eden Hazard looks likely to leave Chelsea in the summer

Maurizio Sarri is also unlikely to be able to call on two of his brightest young talents who are set to miss the start of next season through injury.

Callum Hudson-Odoi ruptured his Achilles in April and had to have surgery. Even the most optimistic of timescales on his recovery have him missing the start of the season.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek suffered a similar injury in a charity friendly against New England Revolution and also faces a significant spell on the sidelines.

Striker Olivier Giroud is also out of contract in the summer and could leave the club while the loan spells of Mateo Kovacic and Gonzalo Higuain will have ended and are n.

Here at we have looked at how the Blues could line-up when the season starts in August.

How Chelsea could line-up at the start of next season

Not much is likely to change in the Chelsea defence unless Ethan Ampadu or Reece James can push for a starting place.

We could be seeing plenty of the young pair next season but Sarri may want to start with experience rather than throwing the pair in at the deep end.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek injured his ankle in a charity friendly

In the midfield three, Loftus-Cheek will be injured and Mateo Kovacic back at Real Madrid.

Mason Mount has been impressive at Derby this season with nine goals and four assists in the Championship.

Christian Pulisic will return from his loan at Borussia Dortmund and likely to go straight into the starting XI as a possible replacement for Eden Hazard.

Callum Hudson-Odoi is set for months on the sidelines

Striking options will be limited without Olivier Giroud and Gonzalo Higuain while Hazard was also used up front this season.

Tammy Abraham has 26 Championship goals this season and could be recalled to fill that gap.

Ethan Ampadu: Chelsea wonderkid linked with January transfer to Aston Villa or Derby

8 Nov

Chelsea wonderkid Ethan Ampadu has been linked with a January loan move to Aston Villa or Derby.

The Championship rivals are said to be keen on signing Ampadu, the Wales international, on a temporary basis when the transfer window reopens.

Ethan Ampadu
Ampadu is widely regarded as one of the best teenagers in world football

The versatile 18-year-old, who can play in midfield or defence, has already made seven first-team appearances for Chelsea, though he has failed to play in any matches this term.

A recent injury has kept Ampadu out of action over the past few weeks, and Maurizio Sarri’s refusal to loan the youngster out over the summer had many suggesting he would be playing him relatively frequently.

Derby, managed by Chelsea legend Frank Lampard, attempted to sign Ampadu earlier this year, but their approaches were blocked by Sarri.

Sarri forced Chelsea to keep hold of Ampadu over the summer

Aston Villa are also said to have wanted the youngster, and the Birmingham Mail say both clubs will return for Ampadu when the transfer window opens in January.

Ampadu, who joined Chelsea from Exeter last year, has already been capped four times by Wales. Former Liverpool striker Ian Rush has previously claimed the youngster will develop into a ‘world-class’ player over the next few years.
