Joe Kinnear’s amazing ‘Yohan Kebab’ interview on talkSPORT, ten years on from his Newcastle United appointment

On this day in 1996, Joe Kinnear’s association with Newcastle United began when he was surprisingly appointed manager.

He wasn’t exactly the biggest success in the role and, following health problems, left the club less than a year later.

But that was not the end of his Newcastle career as he rejoined the Magpies in 2013 – this time as director of football.

He announced his return in an amazing interview with talkSPORT, in which he referred to then Toon star Yohan Cabaye as “Yohan Kebab”, claimed to be in weekly contact with Sir Alex Ferguson and insisted that he could “open the door” to any manager in the world.

Joe Kinnear had two memorable spells with Newcastle United

Kinnear also insulted Newcastle supporters by insisting he had “more intelligence than them”.

It didn’t exactly endear him to the St James’ Park faithful and, unsurprisingly, he was out the door once again just eight months later – this time for good.
