Newcastle manager news: Don Hutchison wants either Gennaro Gattuso or Steven Gerrard in dugout at St James’ Park

26 Jun

Don Hutchison wants either Steven Gerrard or Gennaro Gattuso to become the next Newcastle United manager.

Rafael Benitez is leaving the Magpies when his contract expires at the end of June and owner Mike Ashley is on the search for a new boss with plenty of names, including Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger, touted as possible replacements.

Hutchison may have played for bitter rivals Sunderland, but he has been a lifelong Newcastle fan.

He tweeted his suggestions for who he would like to see next in the dugout at St James’ Park.

He said: “Wouldn’t mind Gattuso or my fave would be S Gerrard.”

Gennaro Gattuso left his role as AC Milan’s head coach in May after 18 months in the job.

He guided the club to a fifth-place finish in Serie A in the 2018/19 campaign but just missed out on Champions League qualification.

Steven Gerrard led Rangers to a second-place finish in the Scottish Premiership in just his first season in charge.

The former Liverpool midfielder has been linked with several other jobs but appears happy with Rangers.

Gerrard was asked about Benitez’s departure on Sky Sports and he said: “Newcastle are losing a great manager. Rafa is one of the best coaches in the world. But Newcastle is a fantastic club with top supporters.

“I’m pretty sure there will be a queue of as long as you can imagine in wanting to get in there to try and take Newcastle forward. I suppose it is a bit of a shock, but when a manager gets within months and weeks of a contract it didn’t really surprise me at all.”

Of the jobs Gerrard has been linked with was Derby County, but this has been addressed by Rams chairman Mel Morris.

“Absolute rubbish,” he told talkSPORT, when discussing life without Frank Lampard, who is about to become Chelsea’s new manager.

“Of course we’ve turned our attentions so that should Frank move we’ve got to start getting ready.

“But what we will not do is begin conversations with anyone other than out of work candidates, because I’m not going to do the same situation where we approach another club.

“We’ve had about 12 applications. There are some good names.”

It’s the news that all Newcastle fans were dreading to hear – Rafael Benitez will leave his post as manager when his contract expires at the end of the month.

Benitez, 59, has been with the Magpies since 2016 and endeared himself to the fans after getting them promoted back into the Premier League and keeping them in the top flight for two seasons.

The club said in a statement: “It is with disappointment that we announce manager Rafael Benitez will leave Newcastle United upon the expiry of his contract on June 30, 2019.

“We have worked hard to extend Rafa’s contract over a significant period of time, however it has not been – and will not be – possible to reach an agreement with Rafa and his representatives.

“We would like to thank Rafa and his coaching team for their efforts over the last three years and their significant contribution to what has been collectively achieved.

Chelsea transfer news: Alvaro Morata reportedly ‘completes’ move to Atletico Madrid as Gonzalo Higuain is left out of the AC Milan squad

20 Jan

Alvaro Morata has completed a move to Atletico Madrid from Chelsea, according to reports.

And Gonzalo Higuain has been left out of Gennaro Gattuso’s AC Milan squad to face Genoa on Monday as the rumours linking the striker with a move to Stamford Bridge gather momentum.

Morata looks set to join Atletico Madrid in the coming days

Morata has endured a torrid 12 months in west London after his move from Real Madrid in the summer of 2017, with the goals drying up for the 25-year-old.

Maurizio Sarri is keen to bring in Higuain in on loan until the end of the season having worked with the striker at Napoli while he was boss.

According to Nicolo Schira of Gazzetto dello Sport, the Spain international will return to Madrid on loan and Diego Simeone will have an option to buy the striker for €55million (£48.55million) at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, AC Milan boss Gennaro Gattuso confirmed Higuain was not in his squad for the Serie A clash with Genoa on Monday as negotiations continue.

Gattuso said: “I want to be honest with you all. We had a poor training session today due to all these rumours. We spoke after the training session and I did not consider him ready for this game.

“I accept his decision. Surely he could have done more and maybe we could have helped him fit in better.

“Right now we have to work with professionalism and determination, all these rumours have not helped us lately and we have to look ahead.”

Blues boss Maurizio Sarri launched an extraordinary rant at his players after slipping to a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal on Saturday night.

Higuain and Gattuso have endured a difficult relationship since the striker arrived in the summer

Chelsea looked entirely incapable of breaking down a Gunners side who have conceded 32 times this season.

Olivier Giroud has also struggled to score goals this season and Eden Hazard has often been deployed as a false nine.

Chelsea target Gonzalo Higuain takes out manager Gennaro Gattuso in training after telling him he wants to leave Milan

15 Jan

Gonzalo Higuain took out Milan manager Gennaro Gattuso with a training ground challenge just days after the Argentina forward revealed his desire to leave San Siro this month.

Higuain is currently on loan at the Rossoneri from their Serie A rivals Juventus, but he has told Gattuso he wants to cut short his temporary stay amid interest from Chelsea.

The Blues hope to sign Higuain this month to solve their striker problems, with Maurizio Sarri, the Chelsea manager, working well with Higuain while the pair were at Napoli together.

Sarri allegedly wants to work with Higuain once again

“When a player makes up his mind it becomes hard to convince them otherwise,” Gattuso said of Higuian.

“I have a relationship with him that features great honesty, we say things to one another’s face.

“At the moment, he’s our player and we’re holding on tightly to him. I don’t know what will happen.”

Higuain has been included in Milan’s squad that has travelled to Saudi Arabia for the Supercoppa Italiana fixture against Juventus, the forward’s parent club, and he clashed with Gattuso in a training session ahead of Wednesday’s match.

There was nothing malicious in the clash, however, with Higuain hilariously taking Gattuso out with a challenge from behind.

Gattuso showed no ill effects from the challenge, with a later clip (9 seconds in) showing him make his own tackle on a group of players which ended with Alessio Romagnoli, the defender, crumpled on the ground.

Milan take on Juventus on Wednesday before returning to Serie A action on Monday with a trip to Genoa scheduled in.

Chelsea transfer latest: Gennaro Gattuso confirms Gonzalo Higuain has decided to leave Milan

13 Jan

Gonzalo Higuain appears close to completing a January move to Chelsea with Gennaro Gattuso confirming the striker wants to leave Milan

The Blues have been heavily linked with the Argentine as they search for a prolific goalscorer.

This latest development could see Higuain, 31, reunite with Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri after the pair worked together at Napoli in the 2015/16 season.

Higuain with Sarri in September 2015

Gattuso, the Milan head coach, said: “When a player makes up his mind it becomes hard to convince them otherwise.

“I have a relationship with him that features great honesty, we say things to one another’s face.

“At the moment, he’s our player and we’re holding on tightly to him. I don’t know what will happen.”

Juventus star Higuain has spent the first half of the season on loan at Milan, with a view to making the move permanent.

However, if Chelsea recruit him then it is understood Juve will demand somewhere in the region of £32million for the player.

Higuain played in AC Milan’s 2-0 victory over Sampdoria on Saturday but made little impact on the game which looks to be be his final appearance for the club.

Arsene Wenger and Fabio Capello on shortlist to replace Gennaro Gattuso at AC Milan – reports

26 Dec

Gennaro Gattuso is in danger of losing his job at AC Milan after a woeful run of form.

And, according to reports, Arsene Wenger and Fabio Capello are on a potential shortlist to take over at the Serie A side.

Former England boss Fabio Capello is in line to succeed Gennaro Gattuso

Milan have not won a game since December 2 and are a whopping 21 points off leaders Juventus – who also have a game in hand.

Following their early elimination from the Europa League, Gattuso’s position in charge is under serious threat.

According to Calcio Mercato, failure to beat 16th-placed SPAL at home on Saturday will see the World Cup winning midfielder lose his job.

Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is on the shortlist to replace the former Italy midfielder, as is ex-England boss Fabio Capello.

Wenger and Capello are both being considered for the AC Milan job, if it becomes available

Roberto Donadoni, Paulo Sousa and former Swansea City boss Francesco Guidolin are also reportedly being considered as Gattuso’s replacement, should he get the sack.

However, it is Wenger who is reportedly leading the way after leaving the Gunners in the summer.

Emmanuel Petit claimed he felt his former boss would take over at Bayern Munich in 2019, although a move to Paris Saint-Germain in a directorial role has also been mooted.

Transfer gossip: AC Milan ‘seriously interested’ in resigning former Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic

3 Nov

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is being targeted for a spectacular short-term return to AC Milan, according to reports.

The LA Galaxy forward is being considered for a move in January, when the MLS season is finished.

Ibrahimovic enjoyed plenty of trophy-laden years with AC Milan

The giant Swede played for Milan for several years before leaving to sign for Paris Saint-Germain in 2012.

According to Sky Italia, former teammate Gennaro Gattuso is seriously considering bringing the striker back to the San Siro.

Although his £1.2million wages seem astronomical in MLS, the Serie A side would be able to afford the striker whilst remaining within Financial Fair Play regulations.

Sporting director Leonardo is aware the club need new players and leaders in particular. The club are currently ten points off leaders Juventus already in the table, with Gonzalo Higuain neding help up front.

Gattuso and Ibrahimovic played together

Ibrahimovic loves Milan, having also played for rivals Inter earlier in his career. He is understood to be discussing the chance to return to Italy with agent Mino Raiola and his family.

Former England captain David Beckham did the exact same thing back in 2009 and 2010 during his days as an LA Galaxy player, helping Carlo Ancelotti out during his stint as manager.

AC Milan news: Ex-Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger no longer favourite to replace Gennaro Gattuso as Roberto Donadoni leapfrogs him

24 Oct

Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been leapfrogged by Roberto Donadoni in the race to become the new AC Milan boss, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

The San Siro side are now understood to be ready to ditch current coach Gennaro Gattuso after a poor start to the season.

Roberto Donadoni was most recently manager of Bologna.

Milan have won just three times in eight Serie A matches and they currently sit 12th in the table.

The club had been weighing up whether to sack Gattuso, who was handed a three-year contract in June, and replace him with Wenger.

But Donadoni is now the frontrunner to takeover at Milan.

The 55-year-old is, like Wenger, currently a free agent after his contract with Bologna expired in the summer.

Arsene Wenger has been linked with the AC Milan job as well as a role at Paris Saint-Germain.

And the Italian, who coached his country to the quarter-finals of Euro 2008, is said to have plenty of backing from within the Milan squad.

The likes of midfielder Riccardo Montolivo are pushing for his appointment and that has persuaded the Milan board to act.

Tiemoue Bakayoko could be forced into Chelsea return as AC Milan threaten to cancel loan – reports

15 Oct

Chelsea flop Tiemoue Bakayoko is on the verge of an embarrassing early return to Stamford Bridge as AC Milan threaten to call time on his loan deal.

The French midfielder, 24, joined the Italian giants on a season-long loan in the summer after Blues boss Maurizio Sarri decided he was surplus to requirements.

Bakayoko is yet to start a game for Milan

And according to Corriere dello Sport, Milan aren’t impressed with him either.

The Italian publication report that Bakayoko, who has made just four substitute appearances this season, has only six games to prove his worth to the Serie A club.

Bakayoko signed for Chelsea from Monaco for £40m in the summer of 2017 but endured a terrible first season in English football.

The Frenchman has not impressed Milan boss Gennaro Gattuso

And Milan boss Gennaro Gattuso recently suggested the Frenchman lacks maturity, referring to certain ‘defects’ in his game.

“Bakayoko has to learn how to get the ball,” Gattuso said.

“We must work correctly. It will not be easy.

“One week is not enough to remove the defects of a player. I would have preferred to be managing older, more experienced club players.”
