It looked as though the right-back’s game was over, but he was patched up on the sidelines and wore a swimming cap to play on.

The unusual headwear managed to prevent more blood streaming pouring Rodriguez’s face as he helped Mexico to a hard-fought win.

Wolves striker Raul Jimenez converted a 93rd minute penalty in stoppage time to book Mexico’s place in Sunday’s Gold Cup final.

They will face either Jamaica or the USA, who both play the second semi-final on Wednesday.

The USA, who have been heavily tipped to win the Gold Cup, will be relying on Chelsea new boy Christian Pulisic to set up a clash with Mexico.

It has been a bumpy road to the final for Mexico, who won 5-4 in a penalty shootout against Costa Rica in the quarter-finals.

No other nation has won the Gold Cup more than Mexico, who will be hoping to triumph for an 11th time this weekend.
