Liverpool youngster Harry Wilson reveals the secret to his incredible free-kick technique – he’s been studying Lionel Messi!

31 Aug

Liverpool’s young winger Harry Wilson has revealed he has been studying Lionel Messi to perfect his free-kicks and long-range strikes.

The 22-year-old Welshman joined Bournemouth on loan for the season earlier this summer and already had two goals in two games for the Cherries.

He opened his account with a deflected long-range effort in their opening weekend win over Aston Villa, and then scored a stunning 25-yard free-kick in last weekend’s defeat to Manchester City.

Wilson earned a reputation for the spectacular during his brilliant campaign with Derby County last term, which also saw him score a brilliant free-kick against his parent club’s arch rivals Manchester United in the EFL Cup.

And the stats support that reputation – the Liverpool starlet has scored more goals from outside the box than any other player in England since start of last season.

And it appears Barcelona icon Messi has been the inspiration for his superb dead ball striking.

“It is something I have always tried to practise,” said Wilson ahead of Bournemouth’s trip to Leicester City on Saturday.

“When the game is tight or you are not getting many chances it can give you a free shot.

“As I have got older Messi is the player I have always tried to look up to and his free-kick record in recent years has been absolutely unbelievable.

“I watch him but he is more a curler technique.

“The one against City was a bit further out so I tried to both to get a bit of power and a bit of whip on it.

“I just try and practise from different areas and try and perfect that.”

Wilson showed off his amazing eye for a long-range strike during his loan in the Championship with Derby last season, where he managed 18 goals and six assists in 49 games.

But the young Wales international says he has had to adapt his technique this season after making the step up to the Premier League – due to the different balls used in the top flight.

He explained: “I have had to change my technique a little bit because the mitre balls compared to the Premier League balls are different.

“I can’t quite get the movement I like to get on them so I have tried to change it up during pre-season and the start of the season.

“To see the one fly in on Sunday makes the practise worthwhile.”

Only five teams managed fewer goals from outside the penalty area than Bournemouth last season.

It’s a statistic Wilson is keen to put right, and he is surely the perfect man for the job.

Wilson, the youngest player to net in his first two Premier League appearances since Anthony Martial in 2015, said: “It is something I will try and bring to the team.

“We know we have got great finishers in and around the box but if I can bring a few goals from outside, that is just going to bode well.”

Harry Wilson: Liverpool loanee has scored more goals outside box since start of last season than any player in England

26 Aug

Harry Wilson has continued where he left off last season, notching two goals in as many games for Bournemouth already this campaign.

The Wales international, who is at the Vitality Stadium for the duration of the 2019/20 campaign, has now scored more goals from outside the box since the start of last season than any player after his stunning free-kick against Manchester City on Sunday.

The youngster, loaned out by Liverpool for a second successive season, curled a sumptuous set piece into the top corner, beating Ederson on the keeper’s side.

It now means that Wilson, 22, has scored 11 goals from outside the box since last term, more than any other player in England.

His four league goals from direct free-kicks in the same period of time is also the most of any player in the Premier League or Championship.

The omens look good for Wilson on the south coast, following up his debut goal in a 2-1 win at Aston Vila last weekend with another fine effort against Pep Guardiola’s men.

While the former Derby loanee continues to progress away from Anfield, some Liverpool fans took to social media on Sunday to question Jurgen Klopp’s decision to loan the youngster out.

One fan posted: “Why did we loan out Harry Wilson?!”

And another added: “Harry Wilson needs to be recalled to Liverpool.”

One thing is for sure… the future is bright for Harry Wilson.

Liverpool transfer news: Harry Wilson completes season-long loan move to Premier League rivals Bournemouth

6 Aug

Bournemouth have signed Wales winger Harry Wilson on a season-long loan from Liverpool.

The 22-year-old becomes Eddie Howe’s fifth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Lloyd Kelly, Jack Stacey, Philip Billing and Arnaut Danjuma.

Harry Wilson, middle, has featured for Liverpool in pre-season

Following previous spells with Crewe and Hull, Wilson spent last season on loan at Derby where he scored 17 times in 46 appearances as the Rams reached the Sky Bet Championship play-off final.

Wilson said he was excited to now get his chance in the Premier League.

“It’s great to be here, great to finally get everything sorted and I can’t wait to meet all the staff and the lads,” Wilson said on the club’s website.

“When Liverpool informed me it was a possibility to come here I was keen to get it sorted. I want to play Premier League football and with a great team like Bournemouth.

“With the style of play that Bournemouth are likely to play, I feel that I can fit right in and help the team a lot.”

Liverpool transfer news: Harry Wilson to join Bournemouth on loan and ‘promised regular playing time by Eddie Howe’

6 Aug

Liverpool starlet Harry Wilson will get his chance to shine in the Premier League by joining Bournemouth on loan – where he has been ‘promised regular playing time’ by manager Eddie Howe.

According to talkSPORT sources, the 22-year-old has completed his medical with the Cherries and is expected to join the club before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Wilson has faced an uncertain summer following his brilliant campaign on loan under Frank Lampard at Derby County, where he made 49 appearances, scoring 18 goals and providing eight assists.

Wilson was on fire for Derby last season and scored a memorable screamer against Manchester United in the EFL Cup

Liverpool fans have been calling for the 22-year-old Wales international to finally get his chance in a Reds shirt this season and he has featured regularly during the club’s pre-season preparations.

However, with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino currently blocking his path to the first team, the Reds have decided to give the youngster more experience.

But he will at least be promoted to Premier League football this term, with Wilson set to join Bournemouth on a season-long loan deal.

And there will no option to buy, with Liverpool keen to keep hold of the promising Welsh ace.

That’s according to talkSPORT’s man on the south coast, Alex Crook, who told Jim White on Tuesday: “It is my understanding Bournemouth are about to complete their summer business with the signing of Harry Wilson on loan from Liverpool.

“He’s been in Bournemouth overnight, he’s completed his medial and it’s going to be a loan signing which will be announced either today or tomorrow.

“What’s interesting is, this deal has changed over the course of the last 24 hours.

“Yesterday there was to be an obligation to buy for Bournemouth, but that’s been removed from the deal; I don’t know if that’s by Liverpool or Bournemouth, but it will now be a straight loan deal, a season-long loan.

“My understanding is there were quite a few Premier League clubs interested in him, as there would be after scoring 15 [league] goals for derby last season.

“But the key to the deal – he’s been promised regular playing time by Eddie Howe. He’s going to have a central role from the start of the season.

Harry Wilson is highly rated at Liverpool but the club want him to continue gaining experience instead of sitting on the bench

“David Brooks is out for three months, so Wilson is going to go straight into the team and he may even start against Sheffield United on Saturday.

“It’s a chance for him to showcase his skills in the Premier League because at the moment he’s only proven at Championship level.”

Liverpool suffer pre-season defeat to Borussia Dortmund but Rhian Brewster, Harry Wilson and Rangers target Ryan Kent star

20 Jul

Liverpool’s pre-season preparations have been dealt a blow after being beaten 3-2 by Borussia Dortmund in their first match of a tour of the US.

In stifling conditions at the Notre Dame stadium in Indiana, the Champions League holders faced the Bundesliga runners-up in what Jurgen Klopp had called ‘the first proper test’ of his side’s pre-season.

Missing veterans Roberto Firmino, Alisson, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane due to the Copa America and African Cup of Nations, Liverpool were hurt by a sloppy defence and Dortmund wasted no time in finding the net courtesy of a close-range strike from Paco Alcacer after just three minutes.

Harry Wilson found the net in the 35th minute to draw level but Dortmund scored two quick goals after the break.

Thomas Delaney made it 2-1 eight minutes into the second half with an easy tap-in and Jacob Bruun Larsen extended the lead after finding the bottom corner in the 58th minute.

Rhian Brewster converted a penalty in the 75th minute after Ben Woodburn was brought down in the box but the Reds could not find the equaliser in the closing stages in front of the 40,361-strong crowd.

Klopp had featured many of the younger players in his starting line-up but handed Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson, Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum their first summer match action after making 10 changes on the hour mark.

Liverpool will continue their pre-season tour with at Boston’s Fenway Park against Sevilla on Sunday.

Liverpool team news: Predicted Reds XI to face Tranmere in pre-season opener

11 Jul

Liverpool take on Tranmere in their pre-season opener on Thursday night.

Jurgen Klopp will be without a number of his first-teamers as they are expected back later on this month.

Simon Mignolet could be called upon given Liverpool’s shortage of fit and available goalkeepers

Sadio Mane is currently with Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations, while Roberto Firmino and Alisson are on holiday following Brazil’s Copa America triumph.

Jordan Henderson, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Gini Wijnaldum played in the Nations League last month and are still away.

Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita are also abroad after their countries, Egypt and Guinea respectively, were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations.

It leaves Klopp short of options, but gives a chance for the club’s youngsters to impress.

“These boys are our future if they want to be our future. That’s how it is because for that they need to take all the steps,” Klopp said.

Jurgen Klopp will be without star defender Virgil van Dijk

“A lot of them will be part of the US tour, we have to use that because of the number of games we play. We need all of them and that’s nice.

“Only as an example, Bobby Duncan and Paul Glatzel; our offensive line that played last year is coming pretty late in joining us in the pre-season, so we have to be creative system-wise and all that stuff, but there will be moments when they have to play.

“Not only at Tranmere or whatever, but in America as well when we play Borussia Dortmund and all the other guys.

“So, it’s good and it’s always like this; when you are already in the club, then the door is always open for you to the first-team.”

Harry Wilson could be thrown in from the start

Simon Mignolet, who has been linked with a move away from Liverpool after playing second fiddle to Alisson last season, is expected to start in goal but new signing Sepp van den Berg will be absent as he is still waiting on his FIFA clearance to come through.

Nathaniel Clyne, another player who could leave after spending the second half of last season on loan at Bournemouth, could feature at right-back with Joe Gomez, 17-year-old Ki-Jana Hoever and James Milner possibly making up the rest of the defence.

Fabinho is likely to anchor the midfield with fit-again Adam Lallana and exciting youngster Curtis Jones playing further ahead.

Xherdan Shaqiri has been ruled out with a calf injury, and with Mane, Firmino and Salah away, it gives Harry Wilson, Ryan Kent and Rhian Brewster a chance to impress.

Wilson and Kent thrived in loan spells with Derby and Rangers, respectively, last term, while Klopp has confirmed Brewster will be part of his first-team plans for the upcoming campaign.

Liverpool transfer news: Harry Wilson will be allowed to leave for £21m – with Rangers boss Steven Gerrard keen

9 Jun

Liverpool have slapped a £21million price tag on starlet Harry Wilson.

The 22-year-old shone on loan at Derby County last season, but it seems his parent club are happy to let him leave on a permanent deal this summer.

Wilson was desperate to stake his claim at Anfield, but it appears his chances will be limited, with the new European champions considering cashing in after his performances in the Championship last season.

Harry Wilson could be allowed to leave Anfield for £21million

According to the Daily Mirror, several Bundesliga sides are interested in his signature – with Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig leading the race for his signature in Germany.

There is also interest from Spain, with LaLiga sides Valencia and Getafe tracking the Wales international  alongside a host of Premier League clubs – including Leicester and newly-promoted play-off final winners Aston Villa.

And in Scotland, Reds legend Steven Gerrard is a confirmed fan and would be happy to take the winger to Rangers.

Wilson played 49 times for Derby last season scoring 18 goals as well as several assists on the way to their Wembley defeat by Villa.

Wilson was just 16 when he was given a call-up to play for Wales back in 2013

Klopp spoke about Wilson last season, ahead of the January transfer window.

“I’m really happy about what Harry is doing. It’s fantastic. It’s a perfect example for it sometimes being really good to leave home to show up somewhere else,” he said.

“I really think Harry left in the right moment. Since I was in everybody told me Harry Wilson needed to go on loan. He scored a lot of goals for the U23s already. He went last year to Hull, he was already good. He came back, pre-season was pre-season, and he went to Derby and now he is with Frank [Lampard].”
