Jadon Sancho: Borussia Dortmund star hailed as ‘absolute weapon’ by Mats Hummels amid Manchester United transfer interest

19 Sep

Mats Hummels insists Jadon Sancho could play for any team in the world amid interest from Manchester United.

The England starlet has been linked with a £100million move to Old Trafford following his superb form for Borussia Dortmund.

Sancho, who left Manchester City to join the Bundesliga giants in 2017, scored 12 goals and registered 14 assists last season and has started this season excellently too.

And his Dortmund team-mate Hummels has described the 19-year-old as an ‘absolute weapon’.

The former Bayern Munich defender told German outlet Bild: “I could imagine him in just about any team in the world.

“Although he’s not mature yet, Jadon is already an outstanding footballer. His one-on-one, the pace, he loves to prepare goals.

“He is an absolute weapon that even has potential for improvement.”

Sancho has already made an impressive start to the 2019/20 campaign, creating four goals in as many Bundesliga games.

Marco Reus missed a penalty, which Sancho had won, in Dortmund’s goalless draw with Barcelona on Tuesday.

The winger remained coy when quizzed on his future earlier this week.

Sancho told Viasport: “I can’t tell the future. I just take it game by game. I just want to give 100 per cent for Borussia Dortmund.

“It’s crazy. Everything has come so fast. But I have a great team. They keep me humbled.

How Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona could line-up for Champions League clash with Lionel Messi set to miss out

17 Sep

The Champions League gets underway on Tuesday night with a mouth-watering clash between Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona first up.

The two teams will meet at Signal Iduna Park for the 8pm kick-off, which is live on talkSPORT 2.

Barcelona suffered a shock exit in the semi-finals last season when they threw away a three goal advantage from the first leg to lose 4-0 against Liverpool at Anfield.

The Catalan giants have had to make do without Lionel Messi so far this season as he is still recovering from a calf injury.

This has allowed wonderkid Ansu Fati to burst onto the scene with some incredible performances for someone who is still only 16.

Borussia Dortmund will have a slightly new look this season after splashing out more than £100million over the summer.

They have made a strong start to their Bundesliga season with three wins from their first four games.

Here is how Dortmund could line up for the match on Tuesday.

Striker Paco Alcacer will play against his former club for the first time since his £18.9million signing in February.

He has already started the season well with five goals in four league games.

Thorgan Hazard, brother of Eden, was a £22.95million addition from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer and he is likely to line-up in an attacking midfield trio with Marco Reus and Jadon Sancho.

Mats Hummels re-joined Dortmund from Bayern Muncih in a £27.45million move.

Here is how Barcelona could line-up in Germany.

Buildlineup.com

Barcelona have got an early glimpse about what life could look like without Lionel Messi.

It has not been an entirely convincing start with two wins, one draw and one defeat in LaLiga so far.

They may have found their next superstar in Fati, though, as he scored two minutes into his full debut against Valencia on Saturday.

They may not risk him in an away Champions League match in Dortmund with the imposing Yellow Wall to contend with. Barcelona may opt for the slightly more experienced Sergi Roberto to take his place.

Messi is back in contention but may not be ready for Tuesday’s game. New signing Antoine Griezmann could line-up with Luis Suarez and Roberto in a front three.

Frenkie De Jong has quickly established himself in their midfield three with Arthur and Sergio Busquets.

How Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United side could look with transfer targets Callum Wilson, Jadon Sancho and James Maddison

17 Sep

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s revolution at Old Trafford is set to go up a notch next summer, as the Manchester United boss plots another raid on English talent.

Following the arrivals of Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka during the most recent transfer window, the Red Devils are reportedly interested in signing Callum Wilson, Jadon Sancho, and James Maddison ahead of next season.

Man United did not replace Romelu Lukaku or Alexis Sanchez, who both joined Inter Milan, and Solskjaer desperately requires more fire power in attack.

There are currently just two senior strikers at Old Trafford, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, and the latter has missed the last two games with a knock.

With Solskjaer just one injury away from a crisis up front, reports claim his attentions have already turned to Bournemouth’s Wilson.

The 27-year-old England international already has three goals this season and his stock continues to rise.

Meanwhile, ESPN also reports that Man United will step up their bid to sign long-term target Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, despite the 19-year-old recently signing a new contract.

And it is understood the Red Devils will be knocking on Leicester’s door again next summer, this time for star attacking midfielder Maddison.

Should they be successful in their pursuit of the English trio, we’ve taken a look at several ways Man United could line-up next season.

While Sancho and Maddison would walk into the side, it’s difficult to justify a place for Wilson in Manchester United’s strongest starting XI.

The Bournemouth man will be 28 next summer, six years older than Rashford and four years older than Martial.

With Solskjaer’s dedication and commitment to youth, it’s hard to see Wilson being anything but third-choice up front.

Also, age aside, it’s highly debatable whether Wilson is a better-quality striker than Rashford or Martial.

Buildlineup.com

Sancho’s potential arrival would likely come at the expense of Martial or Dan James, with Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata at risk of dropping out of the fold entirely.

Solskjaer likes to rotate between a 4-3-3 formation and a 4-2-3-1 shape, and the latter could see Maddison pushed into a more advanced No. 10 role, with Rashford utilised on the wing to accommodate Martial.

Still, though, no room for Wilson.

Buildlineup.com

Bournemouth are one of the few teams who still operate with a traditional 4-4-2 formation – and it helps Wilson thrive.

The leg-work of Josh King allows for Wilson to focus all his energy on getting into goalscoring areas, hence why he is so prolific for the Cherries.

Perhaps Solskjaer is plotting a dramatic change in formation?

Also, with continued speculation around the future of Paul Pogba, Maddison could represent a direct replacement for the Frenchman as a box-to-box midfielder, rather than a No. 10.

Man United boss Ole Gunnar Soslkjaer hoping to sign Callum Wilson, Jadon Sancho AND James Maddison next summer – reports

16 Sep

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly aiming to sign Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson next summer.

The Norwegian boss spent nearly £150million to bring Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James in the summer and he is hoping to sign more domestic talent at the end of the season.

According to ESPN, Cherries forward Wilson, as well as Borussia Dortmund winger Sancho and Leicester playmaker Maddison, top Solskjaer’s list of targets.

The 49

6-year-old wants to get more goalscorers in the squad after allowing Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to join Inter Milan.

And other British names on Solskjaer’s hit list include Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff and Stoke defender Nathan Collins.

The Red Devils have not been put off pursuing Sancho despite the 19-year-old agreeing a new long-term contract at Dortmund in August – and it believed the German club value the youngster at around £100m.

Moreover, Old Trafford deal-makers expect Leicester to value Maddison at between £70m and £80m.

Meanwhile, earlier on Monday, United announced goalkeeper David De Gea has signed a new contract with the club.

De Gea, the Spain international, put pen to paper on fresh terms which keep him at Old Trafford until at least June 2023, though there is the option to extend for a further year.

The 28-year-old has already made 367 appearances for United, and hopes to keep winning trophies now his future has been committed to the Red Devils.

He told manutd.com: “It has been a privilege to spend eight years at this great club and the opportunity to continue my career at Manchester United is a genuine honour.

“Since I arrived here, I could never have imagined I would play over 350 games for this club. Now my future is fixed, all I want is to help this team achieve what I believe we can and win trophies again, together.”

Jadon Sancho joins Cristiano Ronaldo, N’Golo Kante and the other star names former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger claims he ‘nearly signed’

13 Sep

Arsene Wenger has done it again.

The only thing the former Arsenal manager enjoys talking about more than his time as Gunners boss is all the players he ‘narrowly’ missed out on signing.

Wenger has said he nearly signed a host of world class players

The Frenchman has now revealed he tried to bring Jadon Sancho to Arsenal while the England sensation was still on the books at Manchester City.

Sancho joins a long list of exceptional players who are part of the ‘Almost Arsenal XI’.

But who else makes the list? talkSPORT.com has searched through all of Wenger’s past quotes and identified eight world class stars that got away…

Yaya Toure

Patrick Vieira left Arsenal nearly 14 years ago and Gunners fans are still waiting for the club to find a suitable replacement for the powerhouse midfielder.

What’s more agonising is that Highbury chiefs were on the cusp of clinching a deal for Toure back in 2003- and he even played for the Gunners in a pre-season friendly against Barnet.

“It would be up at the top [of my list of regrets],” Wenger recalled of Toure’s passport issues that prevented him from making the switch. “He had an agreement with us – and it’s not because we didn’t want to sign him that he went to Ukraine.”

Toure was close to joining Arsenal in 2003

Willian

Arsenal’s Brazilian football scout Daniel Musatti had been following Corinthians and recommended the now-Chelsea star to Wenger 12 years ago.

“I did the report of Denilson of Sao Paulo that year, and shortly after he was sold to England,” said Musatti. “The athletes were recommended by Wenger’s chief scout to the scouts of Brazil; they were all pre-determined.

“I made the suggestion that we watch Willian and make a full report of him for the analysis of Arsenal’s chief scout, but at the time I was told there was no interest because they were looking at another player. A year after I suggested Willian to Arsenal, he was sold for a lot of money to Ukraine and developed there, turning into that great player we all see today. He could have gone to Arsenal but they preferred to watch Neto Baiano…”

Funnily enough, Neto is now 36 years old and playing in Brazil’s Serie B after a long career spent with almost 20 clubs.

Gianluigi Buffon

While Wenger was on the hunt for a replacement for David Seaman, he shared a dinner with Buffon while the was still at Parma.

However, Juventus quickly jumped to the front of the queue and splashed out an eye-watering £32.6m to bring the Italian to Turin in 2001.

Eighteen years on the veteran shot-stopper is remarkably still plying his trade with the Old Lady, having returned to the club from PSG earlier this summer,

Buffon would have been Arsenal’s main No.1 for years

N’Golo Kante

Wn February 2017, Wenger claimed he’d made two attempts to sign Kante before Chelsea laid their claws on him in summer 2016.

“I tried to sign Kante when he was in France and when he was at Leicester,” said the Frenchman. “We can’t explain everything – transfers are transfers – but it is quite obvious when you look at where he has gone.

“I believe Kante has had a huge impact. It’s no coincidence Chelsea are where they are and Leicester did what they did.”

Cristiano Ronaldo

Wenger has repeatedly said his biggest regret is not signing Ronaldo when he had the chance – which isn’t surprising given the greatness the five-time Ballon D’or winner has gone onto achieve.

“I showed him around and I gave him a shirt. It had his name on the back,” Wenger said in 2008. “But in the end it was a question of the transfer fee between the two clubs.”

Unfortunately for Wenger, Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United just wanted him more.

“I spoke with Ronaldo and Jorge Mendes and he said we had to hurry because Arsenal and Real Madrid wanted to sign him,” Ferguson later said. “I told Ronaldo to join us. He explained he’d have to talk with his mother about it.”

Ronaldo chose United over Arsenal

Didier Drogba

Drogba was an absolute beast against Arsenal – scoring 13 goals in 15 meetings against the Gunners – but he could have indeed played under Wenger.

“I missed him when he played in France at Le Mans – not even in the top league,” the Arsenal chief later claimed. “I knew he was good player there and I missed him. And secondly because he hurt us so much in big games that all this pain would not have happened.”

Drogba loved scoring against Arsenal

Lionel Messi

Incredibly, Wenger also insists he nearly signed Messi too.

When Cesc Fabregas joined from Barcelona in 2003, it is believed Messi and Gerard Pique were also part of the bundle package to north London before it fell through.

“We were in discussions with Barcelona when we bought Fabregas, because Messi played [with him],” Wenger told beIN SPORTS. “You can realise sometimes what fantastic youth teams you had before when you’re a club like Barcelona. In the same team: Messi, [Gerard] Pique and Fabregas.

“Pique and Fabregas came to England, Messi stayed in Spain. We were interested in him, but he was untouchable at the time.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Arsenal were desperate to land the striker in his younger years.

Malmo’s director of football Hasse Borg advised Ibrahimovic not to attend the trial, insisting the Gunners either pay for the striker or do not.

Arsenal failed in bid to sign Jadon Sancho, former boss Arsene Wenger reveals – ‘I wanted to take him from Man City’

12 Sep

Arsene Wenger has revealed he tried to bring Jadon Sancho to Arsenal while the England sensation was still on the books at Manchester City.

The Borussia Dortmund forward is widely considered one of world football’s most exciting young players.

Sancho has contributed to 36 goals since moving to Germany from Manchester City in 2017, and on Tuesday night he scored his first two for the Three Lions during the 5-3 victory over Kosovo.

The 19-year-old left City due to a lack of game time under Pep Guardiola – and Wenger was one of the first to pounce.

“I wanted to take him from Man City when he didn’t get the games,” Wenger told beIN Sports.

“I tried to lure him because he’s from London. I tried to get him to Arsenal.

“He’s one of the best players of his generation. He can dribble, he has the arrogance.

“There’s something in there that is part of the big players. You can call it arrogance, confidence, belief; but it has to be there.”

Wenger tried and failed to sign a host of players who have since risen to the top of world football

Sancho joins a long list of exceptional players who are part of the ‘Almost Arsenal XI’.

Recently, Wenger also confirmed that the Gunners were in talks with none other than Lionel Messi.

He said: “We were in discussions with [Messi] when we bought Fabregas, because Messi played [with him].

Jadon Sancho: Manchester United held talks over summer transfer for England star, confirms Borussia Dortmund chief

11 Sep

Manchester United held talks with Borussia Dortmund over a possible transfer for England ace Jadon Sancho in MARCH.

The Premier League giants were the ‘super club’ Dortmund chiefs had previously revealed they met with to discuss a possible transfer for the 19-year-old winger.

The revelation was confirmed by sporting director Michael Zorc during the Inside Borussia Dortmund documentary, the latest edition of Amazon’s ‘All of Nothing’ series which first followed Manchester City.

Sancho, who will be in Champions League action against Barcelona tonight, has been strongly linked with a return to the Premier League.

His sensational emergence and glittering performances in Germany have alerted the likes of Man United and his former club Man City, who reportedly have a buy-back option for the winger.

In the show, Zorc confirms a meeting took place with United representatives over a possible deal for Sancho, but also insisted he was confident the 19-year-old would stay.

Speaking in a meeting with fellow Dortmund chiefs Matthias Sammer, Sebastian Kehl and chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke, he says: “A hot topic right now is Sancho and Manchester United, both his discussions with the club and mine with the consultants.

“A meeting did take place. Manchester United invited the consultant.

“But according to what I know, the consultant told the club that no matter how much money they offer, we won’t let him go this summer.

“But the player also has no intention of taking that step this summer.”

Sancho reportedly remains one of Manchester United’s top transfer targets and there are rumours they could launch a £100m bid to land him in January.

The Reds Devils were also given hope a deal could be done, with the youngster recently refusing to rule out a possible return to the Premier League, admitting he ‘wouldn’t mind’ moving back to England.

But recent reports from Germany have also claimed the winger has already agreed a lucrative new contract to commit his future to Dortmund which would double his wages to around £10m-per-year.

There’s no wonder clubs are lining up for the England sensation.

No player in Europe’s top five leagues has produced more assists in league football than Sancho since the start of last season – 18.

He has also produced six in six appearances for Dortmund this term, as well as three goals.
