The bout will take place as part of a big show on May 4 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, USA.

Canelo Alvarez will unify WBA, WBC and IBF middleweight titles against Daniel Jacobs

Ryder, 30, is currently the mandatory challenger to WBA world champion Callum Smith, but will put that position on the line while he waits for his title shot.

However, the Brit be an underdog on Cinco de Mayo as his opponent Lemieux is a hard-punching former middleweight champion, now moving up in weight for a new test.

“I’ve seen Ryder fight,” stated Lemieux. “He’s a credible rival, but I’m going to make a statement out of what I’m going to do with him.

“At 168lbs [super-middleweight], I’m going to be the strongest that I’ve ever been.”

John Ryder is 27-4 (15 KOs)

Ryder responded: “I’m fully focused on the fight with David Lemieux but obviously there’s a massive pot of gold for the winner.

“There’s the potential for a fight with Canelo or a fight with Callum Smith, which are both huge.

“Lemieux is a big puncher if you stand in front of him. I’m a boxer-fighter. I’ll box him at times and fight him at other times when it suits me.

“Our fighting styles are sure to gel for a great fight. I’m expecting to win and to win well. I’m there to keep my mandatory position.”

John Ryder reportedly set for fight with David Lemieux on Canelo Alvarez vs Daniel Jacobs undercard

21 Mar

John Ryder will fight David Lemieux on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez vs Daniel Jacobs, according to reports.

The British super-middleweight is currently the number one contender and mandatory challenger to WBA world champion Callum Smith, but will put that position at risk on May 4 in Las Vegas.

John Ryder is 27-4 (15 KOs)

After suffering the fourth defeat of his career, Ryder recorded an upset KO win over Patrick Nielsen and followed it up with a KO of Jamie Cox.

This then earned him a final eliminator against Andrey Sirotkin which he also won by stoppage to become mandatory for Smith’s world title.

However, his shot won’t be called instantly and so it’s reported by ESPN that he will take a fight with former middleweight world champion David Lemieux in the meantime.

David Lemieux is 40-4 (34 KOs)

The Lemieux fight will be no tick over for Ryder and he will be a sizeable underdog heading in, though he has overcome such odds before.

His Canadian opponent has won two bouts since being outclassed by Billy Joe Saunders for the WBO middleweight title in 2017, and he’s now moved up to super-middleweight due to struggles making the 160lbs limit.

In the main event Canelo Alvarez will attempt to unify his WBA and WBC middleweight world titles with Daniel Jacobs’ IBF belt.
