Sheffield Wednesday part company with manager Jos Luhukay, Championship club announces

21 Dec

Sheffield Wednesday and manager Jos Luhukay have parted company after a barren run of one win from ten games.

Luhukay leaves the Championship side 18th in the table and just five points clear of the relegation zone.

Luhukay was appointed Wednesday boss in January

His departure comes two days after Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri announced the South Yorkshire club was up for sale.

“I would like to place on record my thanks to Jos for the efforts he has given to Sheffield Wednesday,” Chansiri told

“But now is the right time for both parties to move on and I wish him all the very best for the future.”

Coach Lee Bullen will take caretaker charge of the team, starting with Saturday’s game at home to Preston.

Sheffield United welcome city rivals Sheffield Wednesday to Bramall Lane on Friday night in what promises to be another classic Steel City Derby, live on talkSPORT 2 from 7.45pm.

A couple of weeks ago, many would have predicted this game would help determine which of the two Sheffield clubs would be in the play-off places.

The tackles flew last season as Wednesday claimed a point at Bramall Lane in January

However, Wednesday’s woeful recent run of form has seen them slip to 17th and out of contention after four consecutive defeats.

Rivals United are also experiencing a pretty torrid time of things with one win in four, but remain third in the Sky Bet Championship table.

What the managers are saying

Chris Wilder (Sheffield United): “Underdogs or favourites? Everybody will have their own opinion on that, but sometimes you have to look a bit deeper.

When we played Hull City recently, they have got a tremendous amount of talent in that group and have invested heavily over the last three or four years.

Blades fan Chris Wilder will know all about the importance of winning the Steel City derby

“You come up against big talented squads, who have spent a lot of money. If we are favourites, I don’t see any arrogance in us, or taking the foot of the gas. They are not allowed to and I don’t see it hindering us.”

Jos Luhukay (Sheffield Wednesday): “I have given my best in the 10 months I have been here. “And what I say before, four weeks ago, was I a king in Sheffield?

“We were in sixth position and stayed in a play-off position. From every side, it was positive.

“Four weeks later, I’m the same person and I’m the same coach and four times later you have a bad result and now I’m a bad person in Sheffield.”

Birmingham City put three past the Owls in their last away match at the end of October
