England Under-21s: Who was in the team? Who do they play for? How much first-team experience do they have?

27 Mar

England’s under-21s suffered a 2-1 defeat to Germany after conceding a late goal in Bournemouth.

Aidy Boothroyd’s side had been on a brilliant run of 18-games undefeated before the loss at the Vitality Stadium.

There is plenty of talent in the young England side with a number of the players seeing regular first team action in either the Premier League or Championship.

The under-21s are preparing for the European Championships with high hopes of emulating the success of younger age groups who have come home with silverware.

Dominic Solanke scored England’s goal

Callum Hudson-Odoi would have been in the squad if he had not been called up to the senior side as a late replacement.

A lot was made of his lack of first team experience as he has made just 23 appearances for the Chelsea first-team.

Here is a look at the players who featured for England on Tuesday night and how much experience they have gained despite their youth.

Transfer news: Sheffield United beat Rangers to the loan signing of Everton starlet Kieran Dowell

28 Dec

Sheffield United have confirmed the signing of Everton starlet Kieran Dowell on loan until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old was linked with a move to Rangers, but it appears Steven Gerrard has failed to convince the 21-year-old to come to Ibrox.

Dowell will join Sheffield United on January 2

Dowell will officially move to Bramall Lane on January 2 once the transfer window opens.

Dowell was linked with a move north of the border earlier this month after Ovie Ejaria cut short his loan spell to return to Liverpool.

Speaking of the capture of Dowell, Blades boss Chris Wilder told the club’s official website: “We tried to sign Kieran in the summer when David Brooks left. Kieran is a talented player, left-footed, brings a balance to the group and gives us competition at the top of the pitch.

“He had a great loan at Nottingham Forest last season and was in and around the first-team at Everton in the summer when we tried to make a move then. We’ve been persistent, we’ve watched him, I went up to Scotland to watch him for England U21s and he’s a talented footballer who wants to play games.

Dowell scored for Forest in the FA Cup win over Arsenal last season

“We’re looking for him to replicate what he did at Forest and hopefully a little bit more, we feel Kieran will add goals and assists to the group.”

The attacking midfielder will bring extra flair in the final third and proved his qualities by scoring 10 goals in 43 appearances for Nottingham Forest during a loan spell last season.

The 21-year-old has been capped by England at U16s level, through to the U21s, where he has scored twice in 11 caps, playing alongside new Sheffield United teammate Dean Henderson this season.

Rangers transfer news: Steven Gerrard hopes to sign Everton starlet Kieran Dowell to replace Ovie Ejaria following return to Liverpool

17 Dec

Rangers hope to sign Everton midfielder Kieran Dowell in January to replace Ovie Ejaria, who cut short his Ibrox loan and returned to Liverpool last week.

Ejaria, 21, joined Gers throughout the summer for the season, but has decided to go back to his parent club after failing to settle in Glasgow.

Dowell is Rangers’ target to replace Ejaria

He had made 28 appearances for Steven Gerrard’s side before cutting his loan short, and had been praised for putting in some impressive performances.

However, Gerrard is now on the lookout for a new central midfielder, to replace Ejaria, and the Scottish Sun say he’s keen on Dowell, who plays for Liverpool’s fierce local rivals Everton.

Dowell, who spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, has made five appearances for Everton, two of which came in the Carabao Cup this term.

He was part of the England team that won the Under-20 World Cup last year, and Gerrard has admitted his admiration for the youngster.

“I definitely admire him,” Gerrard said. “He’s an Under-21 international. He’s a player I admire but there’s not really anything else to say on that at the moment as he’s an Everton player.”

Rangers returned to the top of the Premiership table on Sunday, courtesy of their defeat of Hamilton and Celtic losing to Hibs.

Rangers transfer news: Steven Gerrard wants Everton starlet Kieran Dowell in January loan deal

5 Dec

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is mulling over a surprise move to sign Everton attacking midfielder Kieran Dowell in January.

Now at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, the Liverpool legend is looking to cement Rangers in the position – and may turn to the Toffees star to help him.

England Under-21 star Kieran Dowell in action.

Gerrard has previously lamented a lack of creativity and firepower in his team and has also been linked with a move for Anfield starlet Dominic Solanke.

But the Daily Mirror are reporting it is Dowell, a regular for England’s Under-21s, who is currently at the top of the wishlist.

He spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest in the Championship, scoring nine goals in 38 games, while also getting four assists.

But this campaign has seen him only get two appearances for the Everton first-team – both in the Carabao Cup.

And a loan spell could be the perfect option for all parties until the end of the season.

Dowell was a member of England’s 2017 Under-20 World Cup winners.
