Marco Silva: Everton manager fined £12,000 for confronting Lee Mason after Newcastle defeat

19 Mar

Marco Silva has been fined £12,000 after he confronted referee Lee Mason following Everton’s defeat to Newcastle earlier this month.

The Everton boss was furious the hosts’ winning goal was allowed to stand in their 3-2 victory, as Salomon Rondon appeared to be in an offside position in the build-up to Ayoze Perez’s finish.

Perez’s winner came after the Toffees threw away a two-goal lead in the match.

Silva confronted Mason on the pitch after the final whistle, which led to his Football Association charge and fine.

“When they scored the third goal it was a big mistake by the assistant – it was a clear offside…it’s not just one or two players in offside positions, there were five Newcastle players in the same line in offside positions,” Silva said afterwards.

Everton boss Marco Silva insists he did not swear or use abusive language towards Lee Mason after Newcastle defeat

Marco Silva has defended his outburst at Lee Mason, despite receiving a Football Association charge.

The Everton boss approached the referee at the full time whistle against Newcastle United after he felt a series of contentious calls went against his side during the defeat.

He is currently awaiting the outcome of the charge for improper conduct, but Silva insists he did not act in an aggressive or disrespectful manner towards the officials.

“I didn’t receive the answer yet,” he said.

“Of course, what they say to me or what they did, I’m here to respect. I ask them and now I’m waiting.

“In that moment I wasn’t happy, first of all with ourselves and with some decisions, also.

“But I never was aggressive, never disrespectful with the referee.

“I didn’t use abusive words or something like that and in that moment I wasn’t happy with the two decisions. I was clear with what I said to the referee and to the assistant about the situation.”
