Mateusz Klich won the hearts of Leeds United fans everywhere with his cheeky gesture during the clash with relegation-threatened Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.

Ezgjan Alioski’s freak goal gave the Whites a nervy 2-1 win to keep them on track at the top of the Sky Bet Championship.

United were heading for a frustrating draw when Bolton goalkeeper Remi Matthews made a mess of Alioski’s overhit cross midway through the second half and gifted Leeds three valuable points.

Patrick Bamford’s early penalty appeared to have put Marcelo Bielsa‘s side on course for a routine victory but Mark Beevers quickly equalised as Bolton gave as good as they got in an even contest.

There was a flash point in the second half when Josh Magennis caught Alioski in the back and sparked a melee on the touchline which saw Bolton boss Phil Parkinson receive a red card.

As Gary O’Neil tried to act as a peace-maker, Klich crept round the back of the brawl and squirted Joe Williams in the neck with a water bottle.

Leeds star Mateusz Klich reveals just how close he came to leaving Elland Road

Mateusz Klich has been one of Leeds’ best performers throughout their fantastic start to the season, netting three times to help the Whites top the Championship table after six matches.

Klich, the midfielder, moved to Elland Road last summer and started the season in Thomas Christiansen’s plans, but from the start of October until leaving on loan in January he played just 21 minutes of league football.

He signed for Utrecht until the end of the campaign and found himself playing competitive football again, using the opportunity to impress in the shop window ahead of the summer transfer window opening.

Klich was expected to leave Elland Road, but Marcelo Bielsa had different plans.

Bielsa brought Klich back in from the cold when appointed Leeds manager, and he’s so far started all six of the club’s league matches.

The 28-year-old’s impressive form has seen him recalled to the Poland national set-up, and he’s expected to play a key role for Leeds for the remainder of the season.

Bielsa played a vital role in keeping Klich at Leeds, having given him the opportunity to earn a place in his squad.

And now Klich has revealed he came close to leaving Elland Road for the United States.

Speaking to SportoweFakty in his homeland, Klich said: “Over time, I realised that it could be getting harder to receive a call-up [for Poland].

“I was very close to a transfer to the United States and it would probably have been a nail in the coffin.Β In the end, I didn’t leave, which I’m happy about.”
