Manchester United transfer news: Every centre-back Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have been linked with this summer, including Harry Maguire and Kalidou Koulibaly

27 Jun

Manchester United have been linked with a host of centre-backs so far this summer.

After conceding 54 Premier League goals last season, the most of any side in the top six, boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has prioritised a central defender in the transfer window.

Former Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho tried to sign a centre-back last year, but failed in his attempts to bring Leicester’s Harry Maguire and Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld to Old Trafford.

In the end, Solskjaer’s side finished an underwhelming campaign trophyless and in sixth place.

Buying a towering and commanding defender could help push them back into the top four next term.

Here, talkSPORT.com look at all the centre-halves Manchester United have been linked with ahead of the 2019/20 season.

Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli)

Out of all the centre-backs linked with the club, Koulibaly would arguably be the most exciting capture.

The Napoli defender is considered one of the best in Europe after impressing in Serie A for the past five seasons.

After signing a new five-year contract with Napoli last August, the club are believed to be demanding in excess of £100million for their star man.

While the price tag could prove to be a stumbling block, Manchester United might be encouraged by the Italian giants’ tendency to sell their players for big transfer fees.

Jorginho joined Chelsea in a £57million deal last year and Gonzalo Higuain moved to Juventus for £77.9million in 2016.

Harry Maguire (Leicester)

Manchester City and Manchester United are reportedly willing to pay £65million to land Maguire this summer.

However, Leicester will only consider a bid in excess of £75million, the fee Liverpool paid Southampton to make Virgil van Dijk the world’s most expensive defender in January 2018.

The England defender is understood to be happy at the King Power Stadium, but could have his head turned by a top six Premier League club.

At just 26 years old, Maguire could help steady a leaky defence for years to come at Old Trafford.

Issa Diop (West Ham)

Diop is believed to be on Manchester United’s shortlist of defensive targets.

The Hammers ace, 22, starred in his debut season in England, making 38 appearances for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

It has been claimed United are willing to offer £45million plus a player for Diop, who only joined West Ham for £22million last summer.

His dominant performance in West Ham’s 3-1 win over United last September drew praise from Mourinho.

The Portuguese coach said: “He had a fantastic match.

“Congratulations to the scout that found a 21-year-old kid Diop – a monster who dominated in the duels.”

William Saliba (Saint-Etienne)

William Saliba (right) looks set for a move to Arsenal

Saliba is one of the brightest prospects in Europe.

The 18-year-old played 17 times in a breakthrough 2018/19 season and his form has caught the eye of Manchester United and Arsenal.

Saliba, who can also operate at right-back, is reportedly edging closer to a £22.3million move to Arsenal, with the youngster set to be loaned back to Saint-Etienne for the upcoming campaign.

The France Under-19 international fits United’s new transfer policy of signing young players, though.

The Red Devils have already signed Wales starlet Dan James from Swansea for £18million and £50million-rated Crystal Palace full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka is set to follow him through the door at Old Trafford.

Toby Alderweireld (Tottenham)

Toby Alderweireld can leave for £25million this summer

Alderweireld has just one year left on his Tottenham contract and a £25million release clause.

Signing the Belgium international would be a huge coup for United.

Solskjaer reportedly has reservations over the defender’s age, claiming the 30-year-old would only provide a short-term solution to the club’s defensive woes.

But Alderweireld, who has also been linked with a move to Roma, still boasts five years of Premier League experience and has become one of the league’s top defenders during that time.

Milan Skriniar (Inter Milan)

Milan Skriniar recently signed a new deal with Inter Milan

This transfer link seems to be the most unrealistic one.

Skriniar signed a new long-term contract with Inter Milan in May, which appears to have dampened interest from Manchester United and Real Madrid.

With Romelu Lukaku linked with an Old Trafford exit to the San Siro, reports in Italy say Inter have rejected the chance to involve Skriniar in a swap deal.

The Slovakia international is seen as a crucial part of new boss Antonio Conte’s plans.

Manchester United transfer news: Kalidou Koulibaly, Milan Skriniar and Joachim Andersen lined up for summer moves – reports

7 Feb

Manchester United are preparing three huge defensive signings for the summer, despite not having a permanent boss.

According to reports; Serie A superstars Kalidou Koulibaly, Milan Skriniar and Joachim Andersen are on the summer shopping list for the Red Devils.

Skriniar and Koulibaly could be partners at Old Trafford next season

While caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in contention to take over the job full-time in the summer, no decision has been made with regards to appointing a permanent manager.

But, according to the Manchester Evening News, the new boss could well have three new defenders to ingratiate into his squad.

Napoli enforcer Koulibaly was linked with a move to Old Trafford throughout 2018 and it is believed he would be open to a switch.

However, as Jose Mourinho found out during his time in charge of the Red Devils, a bid of around £80million would reportedly be required to bring him to the Premier League.

22-year-old Andersen challenges Edin Dzeko for the ball

Inter Milan centre back Skriniar is a wanted man across Europe, with chief executive Ed Woodward looking to steal a march on the competition.

And 22-year-old Andersen of Sampdoria is impressing with his assured performances in Serie A.

In the summer, the club tried and failed to bring in a marquee centre-half, with moves for Diego Godin, Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire all falling through.

Manchester United transfer news: Red Devils have ‘offered €60million’ for Inter star Milan Skriniar

10 Jan

Manchester United have made a bid for Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar, with the Red Devils still wanting to bolster a frail defensive line that has cost them at times this season despite their revived form of late.

Skriniar is a player that Jose Mourinho was interested in during his time in Manchester, and he tried to sign the 23-year old throughout the summer transfer window before the start of the 2018/19 season.

At 23, Skriniar is one of the break-out star defenders in Europe, making his way into the Inter first team early in the 2017/18 season

Nothing materialised, however, with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodwood not backing the move, leaving Mourinho an even more disgruntled figure at the lack of business being made.

However, Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb claim that a bid has been made for Skriniar from United – though it is not clarified when the offer was submitted.

The £54million (€60m) bid falls short of Inter’s £81million (€90m) valuation of the defender, however.

Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took charge on a temporary basis, United have impressively won every game but not yet been tested against one of the big six.

That will all change this Sunday as they face an in-form Tottenham team at Wembley – which we will cover with a live match-day blog available on talkSPORT.com – but are these rumours concrete and will United sign Milan, from Milan?

Milan Skriniar Factfile

  • Name: Milan Skriniar
  • Born: February, 11, 1995 in Ziar Nad Hronom, Slovakia
  • Inter career: 53 games, 4 goals
  • Individual Honours: UEFA European Under-21 championship, Team of the Tournament 2017

The Baby-faced Assassin was the ‘chosen one’ to replace the Special One, Mourinho, in December, winning five games in a row (4 Premier League, 1 FA Cup) – the first time this has been done by a new manager in United’s history.

Solskjaer has made it clear that despite being the caretaker manager, he wants a say with the board in transfer targets in January and potentially the summer, Skriniar is one of those individuals.

“They’ve got the targets, but I have not sat down to discuss that yet.”

These targets will most likely all be defenders with Skriniar being joined by long term target Harry Maguire, of Leicester, and Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld.

Manchester United transfer news: Six centre-backs Jose Mourinho could sign, including Toby Alderweireld and Kalidou Koulibaly

11 Dec

The January transfer window is just around the corner and Manchester United appear to be putting a plan into place as they look to sign a new centre-back.

The Red Devils have already conceded 26 goals this season – more than Newcastle United and Crystal Palace – and only have a goal difference of +2.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

This has seen the club go back to the drawing board and, according to The Sun, manager Jose Mourinho, his agent Jorge Mendes, and the club’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward all met last week and they agreed their plans for January.

As part of this, it’s believed a move for a new centre-back will be sanctioned having missed out on several targets in the summer.

But who could they sign? talkSPORT.com takes you through six possible players they could land below.

1. Toby Alderweireld (Tottenham Hotspur) – Estimted Cost = £40million

According to The Sun, the Belgian midfielder is currently the most viable option for the Red Devils thanks to his contact expiring in the summer.

Spurs do have the option to trigger an extension on his deal but it would then activate a £25million release cause, which would almost certainly mean an immediate sale.

Alderweireld has spent three years with Spurs.

Alderweireld is a solid solution for Manchester United but it’s hardly a long-term option.

The 29-year-old suffered a serious hamstring injury last year against Real Madrid and while he has returned and looked back towards his best, he’s looked shaky on occasion and appears to have lost a touch of pace.

2. Harry Maguire (Leicester City) – Estimated Cost = £75million

Last summer, following an excellent season with the Foxes and a fine World Cup campaign with England, the Red Devils almost landed Maguire.

In the end, Leicester’s £75million demands derailed their bid to land the 25-year-old star.

Maguire was one of the stars of World Cup 2018.

Commended for his ability to bring the ball out from the back, a possible combination of Maguire and Luke Shaw on the left is no doubt exciting.

His aerial abilities are also key and make him a threat in both boxes which will be an added bonus.

3. Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli) – Estimated Cost = £90million

One of the finest defenders in Europe, the Senegalese is renowned for his passing game and would be a safe pair of hands at any European giant should they wish to land him.

In recent communications with Napoli it appears Man United have been quoted a sum of £90m, which might be too much for them given their reluctance to shell out on Maguire.

Koulibaly has long been linked with a Premier League transfer.

If the Red Devils do sign Koulibaly, though, his compatibility with their current midfield would definitely be a concern given the lack of orchestrator in the centre of the pitch.

4. Kostas Manolas (Romas) – Estimated Cost = £32million

Back in November, the Greek centre-back’s name cropped up in relation to a switch to Manchester United.

A standout star for the Italian side, Manolas hit the headlines across Europe last season when he scored a historic Champions League goal as Roma eliminated Barcelona thanks to a 3-0 victory at the Stadio Olimpico.

Manolas has been a fine performer for Roma.

Strong in the air and a capable ball-player, he’s a fine all-rounder and has the aggression and heart that will be demanded from Mourinho.

Manolas could also be tempted to leave his home of four years.

He previously stated: “It’s only natural you want to play for the biggest clubs, like Barcelona, Man Utd, PSG and Bayern Munich.

“I think I could make the difference anywhere I went, even at Barcelona – although I have never spoken to them.”

5. Issa Diop (West Ham) – Estimated Cost = £40million

Signed for around £22million in the summer, Diop is already a star at the London Stadium with several superb displays alongside fellow new boy Fabian Balbuena.

Against Tottenham Hotspur, Diop shackled Harry Kane superbly and is a consistent performer at the tender age of 21.

Diop has performed excellently in the Premier League.

Good in the air and fine with the ball at his feet too, he’s an up and coming talent and while an immediate sale by West Ham is unlikely, it would be worth an attempt.

An average of 2.4 tackles per game, 1.8 interceptions per game, and 4.5 clearances per game show he can do the fundamentals extremely well.

6. Milan Skriniar (Inter Milan) – Estimated Cost = £76million

After a meteoric rise from MSK Zilina to Internazionale in two seasons, Skriniar could again be on the move.

His tremendous one-on-one abilities are well known and it’s surely only a matter of time another European giant attempts to prise him away from the San Siro.

Skriniar is one of the finest young defenders in Europe.

A new contract with his current club has been mooted, but the 23-year-old could still move on.

His ability to pick the ball up and drive forward initiating attacks could give a counter attack Manchester United side some extra oomph.

Skriniar’s displays in Inter’s clashes with Barcelona in the Champions League were perfect showcases, despite his side winning neither clash.

Chelsea transfer news: Blues join Manchester United in race to sign Inter defender Milan Skriniar

22 Nov

Chelsea and Manchester United are both assessing the possibility of signing Milan Skriniar in January, according to reports.

The Blues are believed to have entered the race to capture the young Slovakia defender, with Jose Mourinho’s side already expressing an interest in him.

Skriniar’s performances for Inter have caught the attention of a number of clubs

Skriniar, 23, is widely regarded as one of the best defenders currently playing in Italy, having impressed first with Sampdoria and then Inter – the club he currently represents.

Both Chelsea and Man United want to bolster their back lines when the transfer window reopens in just under a month, and Skriniar is a prime target, according to The Sun.

Inter are believed to value the centre-half at around £70million, while the player himself is said to be frustrated at the San Siro club not offering to further increase his wages as contract talks continue.

Skriniar has made 14 appearances in all competitions this season, and he’ll be playing in London next week when Inter face Spurs in the Champions League.

Manchester United transfer news: Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba linked with Juventus, club eye new defenders

20 Nov

With the January transfer window fast approaching, Manchester United are expected to be among Europe’s big spenders.

Jose Mourinho is hopeful of strengthening his side after an indifferent start to the season with United languishing in eighth place, 12 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City.

A number of players have been linked with a move away from the club, too, so it will be interesting to see what deals take place at the beginning of 2019.

talkSPORT.com rounds up the latest Man United transfer news.

Lorenzo Pellegrini (Roma)

While Roma are desperate to keep hold off the Italy international, United are intent on landing the 22-year-old midfielder and are believed to have already met with his agent in London, Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport report. Pellegrini has a £27million release clause in his contract and United would be more than happy to activate it. The 22-year-old has two goals and five assists in 12 matches this season.

Jordan Pickford (Everton)

Mourinho is said to be an admirer of the Everton goalkeeper who starred at the World Cup for England as he helped them reach the semi-final. He has taken that excellent form into the new season and with David de Gea seemingly reluctant to sign a new contract at the club, United see Pickford as the ideal replacement, but would have to part with £60m to get him, report the Sun.

Everton and England no.1 Jordan Pickford is a target for Manchester United, who would reportedly have to hand over £60m

Diego Godin (Atletico Madrid)

United have been desperate to add to their defence for a while now, with the much-maligned Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, along with Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly continually failing to convince. The 32-year-old Atletico Madrid captain turned down the chance to move to United in the summer, but that has not deterred Mourinho, who, according to the Daily Star, hopes to get the experienced centre-back at a knockdown price given he is available for nothing next year when his contract expires..

Mourinho is understood to be looking for a defender to bolster United’s current back line and 32-year-old Godin is said to be the man for the job

Milan Skriniar (Inter)

Another defender on the Mourinho radar is Inter star Skriniar. Considered one of the best defenders in Serie A, United reportedly had a previous bid of £53m for the 23-year-old rejected. Inter are keen to persuade the defender to sign a new contract, with Skriniar’s agent, Karol Csonto quoted as saying: “We’re talking about it. We’re working on it.

“It’s a subject we’ll be facing more intensively over the next few months. He is happy with the Nerazzurri shirt, he is playing well, but he is aware there are some difficulties in Serie A.” According to Gazzetta dello Sport in Italy, United could face competition from Barcelona for the Slovakia international’s signature. His manager, Luciano Spalletti recently joked the player is worth more than  €100 million “If it’s Barcelona, they will have to pay €100m and if I am them I would pay a €20m tip on top,” he said after a commanding display against the Spanish side. “And if I’m Real Madrid, the [€100m] with a €40m tip — that is how highly I rate Skriniar.”

Skriniar is said to be happy in Milan, but has many admirers across Europe, including Man United

Marcus Rashford

It is understood Juventus are compiling a dossier on the Man United youngster. Rashford, 21, is said to be on a list of prospective Juventus transfer targets, according to The Times. The striker’s contract runs until 2020 with the Old Trafford club having the option to extend that by a further year. However, the agreement of any new deal would be dependent on Rashford being convinced he could develop and thrive at his boyhood club, for whom he has started just five Premier League games this season.

Marcus Rashford came through the ranks at Manchester United and is now one of a number of players being watched by Italian giants Juventus

Paul Pogba

The midfielder wants to leave United and rejoin Juventus, the club he left Old Trafford for in 2016, according to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport. A poor relationship between the player and Jose Mourinho has seen Pogba clash with his manager on more than one occassion this season and they were caught on camera having an argument on the training pitch. Barcelona were linked with Pogba – who has been non-committal about his Premier League future – in the summer, but Juve may feel they could pip their European rivals. At the end of the most recent United v Juve Champions League game, it was clear the 25-year-old still has a good relationship with fans.

There is still a lot of love between Pogba and Juventus supporters

Transfer news: Inter Milan boss claims Manchester United and Tottenham target Milan Skriniar is worth £87million but Real Madrid and Barcelona must pay ‘tip’

7 Nov

Another stellar performance has seen Inter Milan boss Luciano Spalletti claim Manchester United, Tottenham, Real Madrid and Barcelona target Milan Skriniar is worth at least €100million (£87million).

The Slovakia international, 23, was instrumental during last night’s 1-1 draw against Barca, a result which puts the San Siro giants on the verge of qualification for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Inter Milan star Milan Skriniar.

And while Skriniar’s list of admirers continues to grow, Spalletti insists interested clubs will have to break the bank in order to force through a move for the in-demand defender.

“How much is Skriniar worth? €100m”, he told reporters in Italy.

“If I were Barca, I’d offer €120m and I’d say, ‘€20m is tip’. If I were Real Madrid, I’d offer €140m, of which €40m is tip.”

Transfer news: Manchester United and Man City must pay more than £70million to sign Milan Skriniar

25 Oct

Manchester City and Manchester United will have to spend more than £70million to sign Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar.

The 23-year-old has been one of the standout performers in Italy ever since he moved to the San Siro in 2017 and drew praise from Barcelona forward Luis Suarez this week.

Inter Milan star Milan Skriniar in action against Tottenham in the Champions League.

The centre-back has shone for Inter and Europe’s biggest clubs are now fighting it out to sign him.

Both Manchester City and Manchester United are interested in Skriniar, who has also caught the eye of Bayern Munich.

But, according to Tuttosport, Inter have warned those chasing the Slovakia international it could cost them more than £70m to sign him.

The Serie A side are under no financial pressure to sell and as such they will not let him go cheaply.

Skriniar celebrates scoring for Internazionale earlier this season.

It is understood £70m is the starting price for Skriniar, but a bidding war could cause that figure to go up.

The defender, however, may have an impact on the price if he opts to force through a move.

Skriniar is hoping to secure a pay rise at Inter, but as of yet they have not met his demands of £3m-a-year.

Manchester United transfer news: Jose Mourinho ready to offer almost £60million for Inter defender Milan Skriniar

27 Sep

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is ready to offer almost £60million for Inter defender Milan Skriniar, according to reports.

Mourinho, the Portuguese, failed in his attempts to bring a new central defender to Old Trafford over the summer, despite plotting moves for the likes of Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire, the Leicester and England star.

Skriniar joined Inter from Sampdoria in summer 2017

The United boss remains on the lookout for a new centre-half, and Calciomercato say Skriniar of Inter has risen to the top of his shortlist.

The 23-year-old Slovakia international is highly-rated and has already been the subject of interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including United’s local rivals Manchester City.

However, United are named in the report as being the most ‘formidable’ team coming in for Skriniar, in terms of a potential offer.

Mourinho is ready to offer around £58million (€65m) for the former Sampdoria star, though he may face opposition for Skriniar – from his own club.

Skriniar is rated as one of the finest defenders in Italy’s Serie A

According to the report, ‘Mourinho is clearly losing strength in the eyes of the Man United leadership’, and the club’s chiefs have no plan to build the future around the Portuguese coach.

They do not want to give Mourinho transfer funds when he’s unlikely to be at the club on a long-term basis, and this, according to Calciomercato, has ruled out any chance of United making a huge offer for Skriniar in January.
