David Beckham ‘makes contact’ with Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi over sensational move to MLS side Inter Miami

11 Sep

David Beckham has reportedly made contact with Lionel Messi over a move to his new MLS franchise.

Inter Miami are entering Major League Soccer in 2020 and are building a squad to take on the best the league has to offer.

Barcelona-based Catalunya Radio claim Beckham has reached out to Messi with a ‘huge deal’ to be the face of the new franchise.

The Barcelona star can remarkably leave the LaLiga giants for free at the end of the season, but it is believed they want to give him a ‘lifetime contract’.

The radio station claim the Argentina international’s advisers have quoted huge demands, which may not be feasible for Inter Miami.

If Beckham can convince Messi to sign it would be a huge coup for the club and MLS.

Any move would appear unlikely, however, with LaLiga’s all-time record goalscorer a committed one club man.

Barca president Josep Bartomeu played down the chances of the club’s superstar leaving in the summer.

He said: “I doubt he’d want to play for another club, but he has earned liberty over his future.

“He’s a big Barca fan and I have no doubt he’ll want to continue until 2021 and we hope another year too.”

Manchester United flop Alexis Sanchez open to joining David Beckham in MLS at Inter Miami in ‘five or six years’

5 Sep

Alexis Sanchez has sensationally left the door open for a potential move to David Beckham’s Inter Miami in the not-so distant future.

The Manchester United flop moved to Old Trafford in January 2018 but, after a miserable 18 months, was convinced by Romelu Lukaku to join him at Inter and the Chile international made the switch during the summer window.

Sanchez, who is still only 30 years old, believes he has another ‘five or six’ years at the top level of European football, but admitted he would love to ply his trade in MLS at some point.

Speaking at a press conference while on international duty with Chile, the former Barcelona forward admitted his career as a Red Devil is almost certainly over.

The Manchester Evening News report him as saying: “I always have offers. They had told me about Miami.

“But I have got six or five years left at a good level in Europe. Although one day I could play in the United States.

“I’d like it a lot to play in [MLS], it is a league that is growing and is very good.”

Sanchez has two years remaining on his mammoth deal, worth a reported £505,000-a-week, and will be hoping to showcase the sort of form which once had Barca and Arsenal fans salivating over his skills.

Earlier this week, Sanchez claimed he could have replicated those heroics for United had Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer not continued to substitute him before the end of games.

“If they let me play a full game, I would win it,” he said. “But sometimes I’d have 60 minutes and not play the next game and I didn’t know why.”

Nonetheless, he added: “When I went to Arsenal it was fantastic. I was happy there. But United were growing at the time, they were buying players to win something.

“I wanted to join them and win everything. I don’t regret going there.”

The Chilean is well aware Beckham has been after him for the Inter Miami project, with co-owner Jorge Mas claiming the club are close to signing their first manager, saying it’s ‘someone you’re going to know’.

How Manchester United could look with Zlatan Ibrahimovic as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer refuses to rule out transfer

30 Aug

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has refused to rule out a Manchester United return for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The LA Galaxy striker is still continuing to plunder goals in MLS and this week teased a return to Old Trafford to help his former side.

With Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez joining Inter Milan, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are the only senior strikers for the Red Devils.

And Ibrahimovic suggested a return to his former side could be a possibility.

“I could play easy in the Premier League, so if United needs me, I’m here,” the Swedish striker said.

But Solskjaer was a tad more reserved on the situation, suggesting the former Barcelona striker’s age could be an issue.

“If he was 28 not 38 next month, there’s a big difference,” the United boss said.

“Zlatan had a great time here, he’s still doing well, it’s unfortunate he got his injury here.

“Who knows, he knows my number, he looked at my house [to rent]. We can speak a native language; if he’s serious I’ll always speak to Zlatan.”

Asked later on whether he’d seriously consider him coming back: “I don’t think that’ll happen, no. I think he’s had his time at the club, he’s had a fantastic career at the club.”

Regardless, here at talkSPORT.com, we started to think about how the giant Swede could fit into Solskjaer’s plans were he to make a sensational return.

Check out the possible formations below!

Option A) 4-4-2 Diamond

United can play two up top while still being defensively sound

Some of United’s best performances last season came on the back foot, away from home and in a 4-4-2 formation.

Defensively sound and primed to counter attack, Solskjaer toppled some of the biggest clubs at home and in Europe by playing this formation.

With Pogba deployed on the left of the midfield, the World Cup winner can drift in and wreak havoc by playing off a target man like Ibrahimovic.

Option B) 4-3-3

James and Martial can provide width and pace on the flanks

Daniel James has made an instant impact at Manchester United and playing alongside someone as experienced as Ibrahimovic would be hugely beneficial to the Wales international.

Zlatan can hold the ball up for the likes of James and Anthony Martial to cut inside and provide a direct threat.

With Scott McTominay anchoring midfield, Andreas Pereira can play alongside Pogba in midfield to also get in behind and beyond the forwards.

Option C) 3-5-2

With a host of centre-backs at the club, Solskjaer can play with three at the back

The signing of Harry Maguire has presented Solskjaer with a terrific opportunity to mix up his style.

The England international can play on the left-hand side of a three-man defence and use his dribbling and passing ability to drive the Red Devils forward.

Alongside Rashford, Ibrahimovic can afford to even drop into a No.10 role or into a wider position. This liberated style of play will suit the 37-year-old as he reaches the latter stages of his career.

Wayne Rooney sent off in MLS just days after ‘every f***ing game’ rant at official

22 Aug

Wayne Rooney was shown a straight red card during his latest MLS appearance as his American stint continues on a downward spiral.

The Manchester United legend was given his marching orders in the 24th minute of DC United’s 2-1 defeat to New York Red Bulls after VAR spotted a forearm smash to the face of midfielder Cristian Casseres.

Rooney’s dismissal comes just three days after he launched a foul-mouthed rant at the fourth official during United’s 1-0 defeat to Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday.

After being substituted in the 72nd minute, the former England captain marched over to the fourth official and repeatedly shouted ‘every f***ing game’, in an apparent swipe at the standard of refereeing in the American top-flight.

And in the build up to the midweek clash against New York Red Bulls, Rooney was already fuming about United’s travel arrangements for the match.

Rather than the accustomed charter flights he was used to playing in England, the MLS primarily opt for commercial flights – making journeys a lot more hectic and time consuming.

Rooney tweeted: “Gutted about result last night. We deserved more. Looking forward to a 12 hour travel day which could be done in 6 but hey this is mls. We will get ready for red bulls Wednesday. #Charterflights #msl.”

Luckily for the 33-year-old, he won’t have to put up with MLS for much longer after he agreed to join Derby County in January 2020.

The striker will be taking his first steps towards ending his playing career at Pride Park by joining the Championship club as a player-coach.

“The commercial opportunities this creates are widespread and significant,” Rams owner Mel Morris said, as quoted by The Times. “On the back of Wayne joining the club we have just been offered a record-breaking sponsorship deal with 32Red.”

Rooney will wear the the no.32 shirt at Pride Park as part of the deal with the online casino, a move which has received widespread criticism.

David Beckham facing multi-million dollar fine after arsenic contamination levels at Inter Miami stadium site found to be more than TWICE the legal limit

21 Aug

David Beckham’s Miami dream could become a nightmare after his proposed stadium site for Inter Miami CF was found to have arsenic contamination levels more than twice the legal limit, says an environmental report.

The former England captain is currently preparing his new side into MLS. But, according to the Miami Herald, his plans for a $1billion stadium and commercial complex have hit a snare.

The aforementioned environmental report has concluded the contamination surrounding the site has hit more than twice the legal limit and hazardous debris in surface-level soil samples at the Melreese golf course.

Melreese golf course has been closed until further notice by Miami’s city council after the findings.

Commission Chairman Ken Russell said: “This is the largest contaminated park in the city’s portfolio. This is a concern.”

Environmental firm EE&G, hired by Inter Miami, took more than 140 soil samples over the last few months. As well as the arsenic, it found barium and lead levels above legal limits.

EE&G concluded: “The debris included fragments of tile, metal and glass, mixed with fine-grain sands, which often exhibited a rusty colour.

“Intermittent wood fragments were encountered along with concrete and other non-native materials, but not evidence of municipal garbage.”

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez is pleased the site was tested and insists the city has chosen another consulting firm, AECOM, to conduct its own tests. The firm will also be paid by Inter Miami.

Suarez said: “Basically, the site has significantly more contamination than what is commercially reasonable.”

An Inter Miami spokesperson said: “Miami Freedom Park has continued to move forward with the various studies needed for the redevelopment of the site.

“Our legal team and engineers have been meeting with city commissioners and staff about the environmental report our consultants conducted on the city’s land.

“We will be working with the city to implement a remediation plan that is thorough, and provides residents and visitors a destination that is safe for all to enjoy.”

Puskas Award: FIFA unveil 2019 nominees including sensational Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Andros Townsend goals

19 Aug

Andros Townsend’s sensational long-range strike against Manchester City has been nominated for the 2019 FIFA Puskas Award.

The goal, scored in Crystal Palace’s shock 3-2 defeat of City last December, is part of a 10-strong shortlist vying to be named the most beautiful goal scored in the year ending July 19, 2019.

Townsend’s strike, a thunderous first-time volley which rifled past Ederson in goal, was earlier this summer named Carling Goal of the Season and it’s sure to be a front runner for the Puskas Award.

However, the Crystal Palace winger faces fierce competition from the likes of Lionel Messi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who both have goals nominated.

Messi is hoping to win the award with his remarkable chip against Real Betis, while Zlatan’s famous taekwondo finish – which also happened to be his 500th career goal – is a strong contender to win.

Fabio Quagliarella’s jumping back-heel volley for Sampdoria is also on the shortlist, and three of the nominations come from women’s football, with Ajara Nchou, Amy Rodriguez and Billie Simpson all in the running to win the Puskas Award.

You can watch every goal nominated for the FIFA Puskas Award, and vote for you favourite, on FIFA.com

David Moyes to manage David Beckham’s MLS team? Former Man United boss says he would consider Inter Miami approach

13 Aug

David Moyes says he would consider an approach from David Beckham’s newly-formed American club.

The former Manchester United, Everton and West Ham boss is reportedly a contender to become Inter Miami’s first manager as they get set to join the MLS in 2020.

Moyes, who played alongside Beckham for a brief spell at Preston, told talkSPORT: “It is something which looks a really interesting project.

“I watch the MLS quite a bit and it is getting better. I don’t know how many people have seen Atlanta. The soccer team are getting more support than the NFL team.

“We talk about Tottenham’s stadium and that is incredible but wait until you see Atlanta’s stadium, it is unbelievable. So MLS is growing and Miami is a great city. It is something which I would consider as an option.

“Miami has got a bit of magic about it. Atlanta’s training centre is as good as anything in the Premier League and I know Miami are trying to do the same over there. The MLS is an exciting league.”

Moyes, who has been out of management since leaving West Ham in May 2018, added: “My preference would be to be back in the Premier League bit if the opportunity came around, I would have to look at it.

“I do know David from our time at Preston so there is a bit of history but we will have to wait and see.”

David Beckham’s Inter Miami manager shortlist includes former Manchester United boss David Moyes, Thierry Henry, and Carlo Ancelotti

11 Aug

Once upon a time David Beckham and David Moyes were team-mates at Preston North End – and now the pair are reportedly poised for a potential reunion in the MLS next year.

Manchester United legend Beckham, along with the fellow owners of the newly-formed Inter Miami, are on the hunt for their first boss.

And according to the Daily Mirror, Moyes is on a shortlist of managers the club are considering for the position.

Thierry Henry and Carlo Ancelotti are also believed to be in the running for the job.

Moyes, 55, has been out of work since his short-term spell at West Ham came to an end in May 2018.

But that extended break out of the game could come to an end sooner rather than later for the former United boss, with Inter Miami entering the MLS in February.

The club have already sold 8,000 season tickets as they get ready to battle with the best America has to offer.

Beckham, 44, already has a 10 per cent stake in the League Two club Salford City alongside his old United team-mates Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and the Neville brothers, Gary and Phil.
