He put pen to paper on a three-year deal to succeed Jose Mourinho after initially being installed as the caretaker boss until the end of the season.

Solskjaer was under contract with Molde when he took over as interim manager and the Norwegian club were expecting him to return.

His run of 14 wins and two draws in 19 games, though, saw the 46-year-old become favourite to be appointed on a permanent basis.

TV 2 Sporten announced the news with a Hobbit parody video.

It sees Solskjaer as Bilbo Baggins take the contract signed by Ed Woodward and Sir Alex Ferguson and run through the Shire to meet the United squad and Fergie, set to the Stone Roses song Waterfall.

They posted the video on Twitter with the message: “Three-year contract for United – Solskjaer is going out on a new adventure.”
