Liverpool transfer news: Ovie Ejaria to join Reading on loan after cutting Rangers stay short

7 Jan

Jurgen Klopp has decided to send midfielder Ovie Ejaria on loan to Reading for the rest of the season.

The 21-year-old will reportedly have a medical at the Madjeski on Monday ahead of his six-month stay, report The Sun.

Ovie Ejaria scored one goal in 14 Scottish Championship appearances for Rangers before cutting short his loan in Glasgow

Ejaria, who has been part of Liverpool‘s academy since leaving Arsenal in 2014, was given his first-team debut by Klopp in 2016 during an EFL Cup third-round win at Derby County.

Having signed a long-term contract the club in June, he was sent to Rangers but, having grown unsettled in Scotland, returned in December and will now be part of Jose Gomes’ squad for the rest of the Championship campaign.

The London-born midfielder was highly-rated by Rangers manager Steven Gerrard and was disappointed to see his stay end prematurely.

“Am I disappointed he’s gone? Yes. Do I think it’s the right decision? No, because I think he had an incredible opportunity here,” Liverpool legend Gerrard said at the time.

“But I’m never going to stand in a player’s way who is not happy and who is not settled because I have people who are desperate to wear the shirt and who would run through brick walls to wear it.

Jurgen Klopp gave Ejaria his Liverpool first team debut during the 2016/17 season

“It is what it is. I have to accept the decision. I’m sad about it, I wish him all the best. He’s a nice kid, very quiet. He told me it was 100 per cent football reasons and I have to respect that.”

Once Ejaria’s loan at Reading is over, he is expected to return to Anfield and compete for a first-team place.

It will be his third spell away from Anfield following a stint at Sunderland last season and then Rangers this term.

Rangers transfer news: Steven Gerrard hopes to sign Everton starlet Kieran Dowell to replace Ovie Ejaria following return to Liverpool

17 Dec

Rangers hope to sign Everton midfielder Kieran Dowell in January to replace Ovie Ejaria, who cut short his Ibrox loan and returned to Liverpool last week.

Ejaria, 21, joined Gers throughout the summer for the season, but has decided to go back to his parent club after failing to settle in Glasgow.

Dowell is Rangers’ target to replace Ejaria

He had made 28 appearances for Steven Gerrard’s side before cutting his loan short, and had been praised for putting in some impressive performances.

However, Gerrard is now on the lookout for a new central midfielder, to replace Ejaria, and the Scottish Sun say he’s keen on Dowell, who plays for Liverpool’s fierce local rivals Everton.

Dowell, who spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, has made five appearances for Everton, two of which came in the Carabao Cup this term.

He was part of the England team that won the Under-20 World Cup last year, and Gerrard has admitted his admiration for the youngster.

“I definitely admire him,” Gerrard said. “He’s an Under-21 international. He’s a player I admire but there’s not really anything else to say on that at the moment as he’s an Everton player.”

Rangers returned to the top of the Premiership table on Sunday, courtesy of their defeat of Hamilton and Celtic losing to Hibs.

Liverpool midfielder Ovie Ejaria makes immediate Anfield return after having season long-loan at Rangers cut short

15 Dec

Liverpool midfielder Ovie Ejaria has cut his season-long loan deal with Rangers short and will make a return to Anfield immediately.

Rangers broke the news on the club’s website, citing the 21-year-old’s inability to settle in Glasgow.

Ejaria scored one goal on loan at Rangers – a 3-3 draw at Motherwell in August

Both clubs agreed to terminate his loan spell with immediate effect.

Gers boss Steven Gerrard dropped Ejaria from the travelling squad for Thursday’s 1-0 defeat to Rapid Vienna that saw them get knocked out of the Europa League.

On Ejaria, Gerrard said the youngster “didn’t seem in the right frame of mind to travel to Austria”.

The former Sunderland loanee was also late for training in the build-up to Rangers’ Group G clash against Villarreal a fortnight ago.

Rangers confirmed Ejaria wishes to go back to Liverpool

A Rangers statement read: “Rangers and Liverpool have agreed to terminate Ovie Ejaria’s Ibrox loan period.

“Ovie will be returning to Liverpool immediately.

“The midfield player has not settled in Scotland and wishes to continue his career back with his parent club.

“Ovie arrived at Ibrox in June and played 28 matches including 11 times in the Europa League, scoring twice for the Gers.

“Rangers thanks him for his commitment and efforts. Everyone at the club wishes him well for his future. Rangers also thanks Liverpool for their assistance.”

Rangers transfer news: Steven Gerrard close to signing Connor Goldson but forced to wait on Liverpool youngster Ovie Ejaria

Rangers have opened talks with Connor Goldson after agreeing a £3million fee with Brighton – but they will have to wait to land Liverpool youngster Ovie Ejaria.

It is understood Gers finally reached an acceptable valuation for Seagulls centre-back Goldson at lunchtime on Wednesday following weeks of back-and-forth haggling.

That has now paved the way for Ibrox chiefs to start negotiations with the 25-year-old and his representatives.

The Light Blues are confident he can be persuaded to join Steven Gerrard’s revolution but, with a medical still to be organised, they do not expect the deal to be signed off until early next week.

Their hopes of luring Reds midfielder Ejaria to Glasgow on a season-long loan have also hit a snag.

Gers were hoping to announce the 20-year-old as Gerrard’s fourth summer signing following the captures of Scott Arfield, Allan McGregor and Jamie Murphy.

He is still expected to follow Gerrard north from Anfield, but it could again take a few days to get the move across the line.

The signing of Goldson will come as a major relief to the fretful Light Blues faithful, who have long been concerned about their leaky defence.

While Gers topped the Ladbrokes Premiership scoring charts last term, the 50 league goals they conceded was worse than any of their top-six rivals.

Bruno Alves, Fabio Cardosso, David Bates, Ross McCrorie and Russell Martin were all tried out in the centre of defence as Pedro Caixinha and then Graeme Murty looked to tighten up without success.

New boss Gerrard will hope Goldson can finally provide the steady hand Rangers need as he looks to take his side through the Europa League qualifiers before challenging Celtic domestically.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard closing in on Liverpool youngster Ovie Ejaria

3 Jun

New Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is reportedly looking to bring in Liverpool youngster Ovie Ejaria.

Ejaria, 20, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Sunderland, looks set for a move north of the border as Gerrard hopes to use his ties with the club to sign more young players from Anfield including the likes of Ryan Kent and Harry Wilson.

However, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will have the final say on where Kent and Wilson will play in the 2018/19 campaign.

But The Sun claims that Ejaria is far enough down the pecking order to be released.

The Glasgow-based club are keen to bring Ejaria up to speed for their crucial European qualifiers next month.

And Gerrard, who officially started his new role on June 1, has been on the lookout for more names to bring in.

The Liverpool legend was spotted in France watching the England Under-21s in action against Qatar on Friday at the Toulon Tournament.

Ejaria was initially named the in the Young Lions squad for the trip but had to pull out before the first game through injury.
