Southampton‘s out on loan defender Wesley Hoedt endured a nightmare start to life in LaLiga after being sent off on his debut for Celta Vigo.

The defender was shown a second yellow card for dangerous play after a coming together with a Real Valladolid player.

He was furious with the referee’s decision as his side succumbed to a 2-1 defeat in the match.

Hoedt signed for Los Celticos on loan after being made surplus to requirements by new Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl.

The Dutchman was a regular under Mark Hughes but hadn’t started a match for the new manager, and he signed for the Spanish outfit with the option to move permanently in the summer.

And the centre-back could not hide his bemusement after falling out of favour at St Mary’s.

Speaking to Dutch newspaper Noordhollands Dagblad after completing his move, Hoedt said: “It’s been very strange.

“I played everything. Almost fifty games in a row I was in the starting line up and I played ninety minutes. Until I suddenly came to be at the side of it. I never had a clear explanation.”

Nonetheless, Hoedt insisted he was not looking for revenge.

Hoedt had fallen out of favour with new Saints boss Hassenhutl

“No, I do not feel that way,” he added. “What I said: I just want to continue with what I was doing. I did well at Lazio and at Southampton. I want to continue that here.”

Following his dismissal, Hoedt became the first Celta player to be sent off on his debut since Jose Guillermo Del Solar in 1996.

Wesley Hoedt: Southampton defender joins Celta Vigo on loan for remainder of the season

Wesley Hoedt has left Southampton to join Celta Vigo on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Netherlands international Hoedt has not featured for Saints under new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, with his most recent appearance coming in a 3-2 defeat by Fulham that became Mark Hughes’ penultimate match in charge.

The deal taking the 24-year-old to Spain includes an option for Celta to make the move permanent in the summer.

A statement on Southampton’s website read: “Hoedt’s move will allow him to gain additional playing time between now and the end of the season, while also further helping Hasenhuttl to achieve his aim of trimming the first-team squad this month.

“The club would like to wish Wesley good luck for the rest of the season.”

Hoedt, who joined Southampton on a five-year contract from Lazio for £15million in the summer of 2017, follows Steven Davis and Manolo Gabbiadini in leaving St Mary’s this month.

He has made 45 appearances for the south coast club in all competitions, with his only goal coming in last season’s FA Cup defeat of West Brom.

Hoedt, who won the most recent of his six international caps against Bulgaria in September 2017, joins fellow Saints loanee Sofiane Boufal at Celta.

The centre-back’s new side are battling relegation from LaLiga, sitting a point and a place above the relegation zone in 17th.
