talkSPORT.com rounds up all the latest news and gossip from the world of wrestling…

Seth Rollins defeats Brock Lesnar for the Universal title

Seth Rollins closed out SummerSlam

Fans seem to seldom enjoy Brock Lesnar matches in protest of his part-time deal, but there is no denying that when the booking is right and he has the correct dance partner, he is capable of magic.

With Seth Rollins at SummerSlam for the Universal title, Lesnar had one of his best nights in recent memory, and yet, he lost the title.

Rollins defeated Lesnar clean as a whistle after a third Curb Stomp to pick up the 1-2-3.

The Beast Incarnate had only regained the Universal title from Rollins after cashing in his Money in the Bank contract at Extreme Rules last month.

However, despite taking a few brutal beatings over the past couple of weeks, Rollins managed to come out on top in SummerSlam’s main event and earn a decisive victory over a legendary performer like Lesnar.

Fans displeased with Goldberg’s return after disaster match with Undertaker

Goldberg had a disaster outing at the last Saudi Arabia show and Dolph Ziggler was tasked with building him back up at SummerSlam on Sunday.

The Showoff did his job as the former WCW icon had his redemption the same way The Undertaker had his at Extreme Rules.

Goldberg won the match the same way he’s won any other match: hit a few spears and the jackhammer – one, two, three.

Ziggler kept picking the mic up after the match and invited more punishment from the Hall of Famer.

The idea from WWE is to rebuild Goldberg’s name ahead of the Crown Jewel pay-per-view in Saudi Arabia later this year.

While that seemed to be achieved and the live audience enjoyed the moment, plenty on Twitter did not.

Matt Riddle reveals tense real-life backstage confrontation with Goldberg

Matt Riddle is a blooming superstar in NXT

Any wrestling fan knows that Matt Riddle and Goldberg do not get along at this point.

For the first time ever, the two men were in the same place under a WWE roof on Sunday and they finally came face-to-face.

In case you missed it, NXT star Riddle absolutely slated the WWE Hall of Famer for his terrible performance against the Undertaker in Saudi Arabia.

He doubled down on that take when he spoke to talkSPORT at Download Festival this summer and has refused to back down on his claims against either Goldberg or Brock Lesnar.

At SummerSlam, Riddle was backstage filming Watch Along on the WWE Network and he watched the Goldberg match.

During the show, he explained the altercation he had with Goldberg earlier that day.

WWE and AEW news: Four SummerSlam matches that WWE are yet to announce, Natalya reveals Ronda Rousey wants to return

3 Aug

The wrestling business is on fire right now and SummerSlam is only eight days away.

Let’s dig into the best bits of news:

Vince McMahon, Stephanie McMahon and Triple H backstage

Rumoured SummerSlam matches

Aleister Black vs. Sami Zayn, a Fatal 4-Way for the women’s tag team titles, Drew Gulak vs. Oney Lorcan for the Cruiserweight title and Drew McIntyre vs. Cedric Alexander are all listed internally within WWE for the SummerSlam pay-per-view.

The card is rammed and that is without the Raw or SmackDown Tag Team titles on the show. Or the Intercontinental title, for that matter.

Real reason WWE hired Paul Heyman and Eric Bischoff?

The Wrestling Observer claim that the real reason Vince McMahon hired two of his former foes in creative positions is to show shareholders he’s ready to combat the ratings decline.

On RAW this past week, Paul Heyman is said to have done the vast majority of the show his way. On SmackDown, Vince ordered a complete re-write on the day of the show that extended into the actual live show.

Natalya on Ronda Rousey’s possible WWE return

“Ronda I think misses it a lot,” Natalya told NYPost.com. “I think that she misses it. I think that she definitely wants to come back, but I think that she’s so focused on having a family and that’s something. … When Ronda makes a promise to somebody, she stands by her word. And she really wants to have a family and she’s really focused on that with her husband Travis.”

“So I believe that that right now is her main focus, but I also think she still has a lot of unfinished business is WWE and so, for me, because she kind of fell in love with it more than she even realized she would, I think she’ll be back, but it’s all about timing and I just think her family is coming first right now and I think every woman can relate to that.”

Kofi Kingston opens up about Randy Orton’s politics

Kingston told the Ottawa Sun: “For those who don’t know, 10 years ago — in 2009 — I was on my way to the main-event scene and I was wrestling a top-tier guy like Randy Orton. The direction it seemed to be going was I would get main events — it didn’t happen. I come to find out Randy Orton had a lot to do with holding me back, using his influence to make sure I never got to the main-event scene.

“I’ve had Intercontinental championship reigns, U.S. championship reigns, tag team titles, but I’d never had a WWE championship match — not one time in 10 years (until Wrestlemania).”

‘I can’t wait to face Ronda Rousey at SummerSlam’ – Alexa Bliss aiming to defend her WWE Raw Women’s Championship against UFC Hall of Famer

16 Aug

Alexa Bliss has her sights set on ‘The Baddest Woman On The Planet’ this Sunday at SummerSlam.

WWE has seen it’s fair share of crossover athletes over the years, but few have made an impact as big as Ronda Rousey. The UFC Hall of Famer made her WWE debut at this year’s WrestleMania to much acclaim, and has since played a major role on WWE television as one of Raw’s biggest draws.

Bliss can’t wait to get into the ring against ‘Rowdy’ Ronda Rousey

This Sunday the former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion gets another shot at gold, when she challenges WWE Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss as WWE invades Brooklyn once again for SummerSlam.

Bliss, a five-time champion in her own right and arguably the best all-round performer on the WWE roster, will put her strap on the line against ‘The Baddest Woman On The Planet’ and despite Rousey’s reputation and her impressive start in WWE, the champion can’t wait to step in the ring with someone she calls a sporting icon.

Alexa, this Sunday you go one-on-one with Ronda Rousey. What do you make of Rousey’s impact on sports and sports-entertainment?

I’ve watched her career, and I really do think she is what she says she is ‘The Baddest Woman On The Planet’. She’s a UFC Hall of Famer, a forefront in women’s sports in general. She’s so real and so tough and a real inspiration. I feel like she’s made such a name for herself as one of the top athletes in the world, so being in the ring with her will be an honour.

Alexa Bliss believes her opponent is an ‘inspiration’

Especially seeing her grow as a WWE performer, I’m excited to see how good she gets two, three years from now. I’m happy to be part of the process and I can’t wait to face her at SummerSlam.

What do you say to those who have suggested that title shots have come too early for Rousey and they she hasn’t paid her dues in WWE. Has her rise been unfair?

She may not have paid her dues in the ring, but she’s done it in other ways. She’s literally a sports icon and paid her own dues to get there. If she wants to step into our world and do what we do I welcome it with open arms, it’s not unfair at all.

With Ronda being as popular as she is and yourself a multi-time champion, is there an argument for the match to headline SummerSlam on Sunday?

With the women’s evolution going the way it is I say why not. You have a five-time women’s champion going up against a UFC Hall of Famer, so why not?

The clash for the Raw Championship looks set to be an enthralling one

I think that would be awesome. However, this is Ronda’s first big pay-per-view singles match, so it’s going to be a big moment wherever it is on the card.

The title match marks another notch in your already impressive WWE CV. Can you pick out a highlight of what’s been a whirlwind of a five years with WWE?

Nothing ever tops your first ever title win and I did love winning the title from Becky Lynch at TLC – especially because my whole family was there. But I did love my match with Bayley that saw me become first ever woman to hold both the Raw and Smackdown championships. I would say going into WrestleMania as champion too, but for some reason I can’t seem to retain at WrestleMania!

You’ve been one the major players in the revolution of women in WWE, so with October’s first all-female pay-per-view on the horizon who would your dream opponent be?

Trish Stratus! I always watched Trish growing up and it would so much fun being in the ring with her. Especially because I missed her at the Royal Rumble because I wasn’t part of that match. I’d love to mix it up with her. If that opportunity comes, I’d be really excited about it.

Trish Stratus would be Alexa Bliss’ ideal match-up

One thing we are yet to see from Alexa is a run as a good guy. Is this something you’d be interested in doing at some point down the road?

I think it be fun to be a good guy down the line. I have a different mentality when being a bad guy, as I feel I shouldn’t do flashy wrestling moves or certain athletic skills, so it be cool to show what else I could do other than talk crap on a microphone. However, I do enjoy being a bad guy so much more. I started out in NXT as good guy and it didn’t fit, so maybe one day I could go down that route again but for now I’m having too much fun.

What’s next for Alexa Bliss? You’ve won both championships, been Miss Money In The Bank, so what ambitions do you have left in WWE?

I would say main event WrestleMania. I’d say that’s the same for all the women, but definitely for me and to see that women’s evolution cemented.
