Newcastle United confirm Yoshinori Muto transfer after being granted a work permit

2 Aug

Yoshinori Muto has joined Newcastle from Mainz for a reported £9.5m, the Premier League club have confirmed.

Muto, a Japan international who played at the World Cup, signed a four-year contract and had been a Mainz player since 2015.

Muto joins fellow new arrivals Martin Dubrvaka, Ki Sung-yueng, Fabian Schar and Kenedy.

“As the first Japanese Newcastle United player, I am honoured to be a player for such a big club. I hope to achieve good results – that is what I am here to do. I would like to perform well and leave my name in Newcastle’s history,” he told nufc.co.uk.

Manager Rafa Benitez, who had earlier said fans should be concerned about the club, said: “I am really pleased to have Yoshinori Muto with us. We were following him for quite a while.

“Hopefully he can bring us his energy and work-rate and help the team to improve and be better for the new season.”

Newcastle agree £9.5m fee to sign striker Yoshinori Muto from Mainz

Newcastle have reportedly agreed a fee to sign Yoshinori Muto.

The Mainz striker is understood to have boarded a flight from Japan and is set to arrive in Newcastle shortly.

Muto represented Japan at the 2018 World Cup

Sky Sports claim the fee is £9.5m and will see the 26-year-old arrive to potentially replace Aleksandar Mitrovic, who is currently in negotiations with Fulham.

The deal for Muto is subject to him securing a work permit, which is not expected to be an issue.

Last season at Mainz, the striker netted ten times in 30 matches, also recording five assists.

Muto had earlier posted a cryptic picture of him boarding his flight on Instagram.

Transfer news: West Ham and Newcastle target Mainz forward Yoshinori Muto

West Ham and Newcastle are interested in signing Yoshinori Muto, according to reports.

Muto, the Mainz forward, is entering his fifth season in German football, first arriving in the Bundesliga from FC Tokyo in 2015.

Muto has impressed in his three years at Mainz

He’s netted 20 league goals in that time, and the 26-year-old was part of the Japan side that caught the eye at the recent World Cup.

Muto has yet to report back to pre-season training, with his extended holiday running until Friday, but Bild say he may not return to the Opel Arena club.

West Ham and Newcastle are named as holding an interest in Muto, and Mainz are seriously considering whether to sell the forward.

Muto was part of the Japan squad at the recent World Cup

He has a contract that runs until next summer, and is valued at around £18million (€20m) by Mainz. As Muto cost just £2.5million when bought from Tokyo in 2015, the Bungesliga outfit are aware they can make a huge profit on the player this summer, or risk losing him for free this time next year.
