Middlesbrough failed with a deadline day bid of £4.5m for former Manchester City striker Felipe Caicedo, according to reports in Italy.
The 29-year-old is currently plying his trade with Lazio but he has been linked with a return to England recently.
Leeds United have been tracking the Ecuadorian and looked at striking a deal this summer.
But, according to Calciomercato, it has also been revealed that Middlesbrough tried to sign Caicedo too.
The Championship club reportedly failed with a deadline day offer of £4.5m for the striker.
Lazio rejected the bid as they deemed it too low and they were holding out for closer to £9m.
Caicedo scored three goals in Serie A last season, featuring predominantly as a substitute.
