Tottenham transfer news: Danny Rose reveals he expects to stay at Spurs after ‘shock’ start against Manchester United

Tottenham Hotspur defender Danny Rose has revealed he expects to remain at the club this season, following his ‘shock’ recall to the team.

Rose, out-of-favour and linked with a loan move to Paris Saint-Germain, was handed a surprise start in Monday’s Premier League clash against Manchester United.

He did not feature in Spurs’ first two games of the season and, by his own admission, he was rusty at Old Trafford.

But after a poor first-half, where a sloppy back-pass almost gifted United a goal, he improved and began to show signs of the player who was considered England’s best left-back a few years ago.

Rose’s Tottenham career looked all-but over after falling down the pecking order during a spell which saw him struggle with injury and his mental health – openly talking about his struggles in an interview with talkSPORT last November.

But having featured against United, the defender has thanked manager Mauricio Pochettino for giving him an unexpected boost of confidence and says he hopes to reclaim his spot as Spurs’ first-choice left-back this season.

“The manager has spoken to us all a couple of weeks ago and said everybody starts from zero,” Rose said.

“We all have to start again trying to impress him and that’s great. We all go again.

“I’m good. I’m not listening to the speculation about my future.

“If I’m here past Friday, which I’m expecting to be, which will be great, I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve at the end of the season.

“Me and the manager have had a conversation over the phone, as well as two one-hour meetings over the last couple of weeks.

“We’re both aware of the situation. (Monday) was massive for me that, even though there is speculation, he still trusts and believes in me to put me into such a massive game, a game where he didn’t need to change anything.

“For me, over the last four or five years we’ve worked together, that is probably the biggest thing he has done for me.

“I have to thank him for that. I have to thank because it would have been easy for him not to play me given the speculation that is going around.”

Rose has hailed Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino for his support

Rose had a difficult start in his first match since playing in England’s third-place play-off in Russia.

You could see the player curse himself after nearly handing United a goal with a wayward backpass, but he improved as the match went on and spoke of his joy of being selected for such a big game.

“It was amazing,” he added.

“I was nervous to see if I was going to be in the squad and I really didn’t see myself playing.

“I was so shocked in the meeting before we arrived. I thought there was going to be a change but never did I think that it was going to be me coming in.

“It was a massive shock. I’m over the moon that I’m able to be part of this win.

“I just felt that we won last week, had a very good performance.

“I just thought the manager would have stuck with the back line that played the last few games. It was a surprise and I’d like to think it’s one that’s paid off.

“I had a very poor first half but I felt I got better in the second half.

“We got a clean sheet, we scored goals and we forget about it, go to a difficult game on Sunday [at Watford] and look to keep going with the momentum that we’ve got now.”
